Ok, I know I posted a sketchup plan post before but it died and I have drastically added more to my plan(m80's, dining room, colors, more accurate dimensions for everything). This is the living room of the house I will be moving into in about a month when were done painting it. That giant cabinet will hold the tv and emotiva lmc-1, lpa-1. Any thoughts or input on this would be awesome.

I thought the TV was going above the fireplace. You'll experience a very strange effect during movies because your TV is not centered between the M80s.
Posted By: Scuffernoose Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 04:25 AM
Yeah it will eventually, but I'm building a theatre slowly and don't have the money right now for a flat screen. For now I'm just going to enjoy stereo music from the M80's. I hardly ever listen to surround movies anyway. Music is my thing. I'm a multi instrumentalist and decent music producer, so I love that audio bliss. When I'm watching the tube, its usually broadcast television. Eventually though I want to enjoy multichannel music.

btw, do you like those m80's I made? It took me way too long.
Posted By: JohnK Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 04:32 AM
Adam, the general suggestion is that the M80s should be separated by about the same distance as you're sitting from them and toed-in so that the tweeters point at your ears.
Posted By: danmagicman7 Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 04:36 AM
In my opinion, you should move your M80's to the wall with (what looks like) a very long window. Move the couch that is there across the room so it is facing the newly positioned M80's.
Posted By: Scuffernoose Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 04:40 AM
you know...That actually might be a good idea. Later, I'm going to try moving things around in sketchup and see how that works. I'll post a picture of it here when I'm done.
Posted By: Scuffernoose Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 04:42 AM
The only thing is... wouldn't it be kind of silly having a large cabinet in front of a window?
Posted By: Scuffernoose Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 05:22 AM

I think I like it. Who cares about the window, the world is an ugly place. I took away the two seat couch and endtable. Its definitly more open. Besides, who am I kidding, I don't really have that many friends to seat anyways.
Posted By: CV Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 05:24 AM
My TV used to be in front of my window, and I didn't miss looking through it. Not a bit! Of course, people with better views may have a different opinion.

I like Dan's plan.

Leave the giant cabinet where it is, put the tv under the window if desired. If you wont be using the 80's for tv viewing, leave the tv in the GC (giant cabinet) and use one of the multitude of altenative seating for tv viewing. Long term, put a drop down screen over the window and a projector on top of the GC.

Do you have a choice about the cabinet? This is something you already own?

It just seems too big for the room from any of the drawings you've posted.
Posted By: Scuffernoose Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 07:56 AM
Ya, I'm getting a ton of old furniture from my parents cause they are remodeling. They are also giving me a 50" television which fits nicely in that cabinet with slots for av stuff beneath. But your right, ideally I think a seperate av rack and a flat screen would be best.
Posted By: danmagicman7 Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 08:17 AM
Yea, that is sooo much better. Open's up your entire room. Now the kitchen bar area can see the TV too.

Glad it turned out well.
Posted By: jonahbug Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 11:26 AM
seems like the cabinet is just too big for the room. I like the idea of removing the love seat and putting the tv by the window. I would suggest something like this though....

Get a nice sleek tv stand that your 50incher can fit on now, but also a stand that will look nice with a flatscreen on it. It will make your room look even bigger. You might as well get rid of the big ol thing now....sounds like when you have the funds, youll be getting rid of it any way to make room for the new flatscreen. The best place to look is on the internet. A lot of audio or furniture stores have very poor selections. Find what you want and order online. Youll save some cash and get what you want. I found this site is pretty good. http://www.racksandstands.com/

Awesome. That's actually a really good idea. Thanks man.
Posted By: Scuffernoose Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 02:27 PM

That looks much better I think. I picked out this cabinet for now. I put in one of my 27" tvs on top. I don't really want that huge 50". Its so deep that stands are too expensive. It doesnt matter anyways cause I'll probably get a 42" flat screen sometime in the next year.

Here is another thought on arrangement.
From this pic assuming the top is north.

Lose the big cabinet or find something smaller for placement against the north wall between the dining window and the fireplace.
Take the couch under the right hand (east) window, move it over where the big cabinet presently stands oriented north to south.
Shift the bottom (south) couch over towards the window a little bit which now centers it in front of the tv and between the M80s.
Adjust all side table accordingly (e.g. if the long couch is too big to shift more towards the window, consider swapping the long couch with the love seat for direct in front of tv viewing.

This orientation will also remove the edge of the east couch from sitting in front of the right side M80.

I got another question for ya. Its an sound acoustics question. My neighbors house is about 10 feet away on the other side of that wall with the fireplace. What would be louder for them as far as noise pollution, the first layout plan with speakers facing inward toward the house? Or would the second one be louder? My guess is the first one would be louder because of the bass resonance in a corner. Am I right?
Posted By: Scuffernoose Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 03:49 PM
Thank you for the advice, that could work. I'll have to try that out.
Posted By: danmagicman7 Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 04/30/07 08:36 PM
I honestly don't think it would make much of a difference...if any

That should be one of the last things you should consider for your speaker placement. Just find the best orientation that works for you. Movies are going to be loud anyways. Keep it loud until people start complaining.
Posted By: Seattlelite Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 05/01/07 10:37 PM
I like the placement of the TV against the big windows. I agree, loose the big cabinet, 50" TV, and one of the couch. The whole room feels so much more spacious without them. Plus you would have good placement for left and right surround speakers should you decided to add them later on, as oppose to the original layout.

As for the noise pollution, who cares about neighbor? I don't think it matters where you put the speakers.
Posted By: Scuffernoose Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 05/01/07 10:58 PM
Yeah, I'm liking this new setup more and more.

Be careful, you might just end up being my neighbor some day. You are just down the road from me over there in Mill Creek. I just bought a house in Woodinville.

We could be reaching critical mass for an Axiom gathering in the Puget Sound area!

My TV is in front of the window, too. So, I'm partial to that approach.

Oo very nice, Both those setups look pretty freakin sweet.
btw, tom tuttle, I have never know anybody who has seen that movie, let alon liked it like me. "Fight, Fight, Fight for Washington State!"

Adam, I think it's a classic, in its own way.

My high school used the WSU Fight Song also.

I mean really, "oh yes, Thailand."

Wow, it looks the end of that couch is right in from of the left floorstander. Is that affecting the sound?

While it's certainly less than ideal, it has little effect on the sound. However, if I had any other option I would do it differently.

Shut up Peter!

K, so I've gotten quite obsessed with this program and become pretty good at it. Here is my latest pictures of the layout plan. Let me know what you guys think. One week from today I will actually begin moving in!

Posted By: Mojo Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 05/13/07 10:56 PM
Wow! That is a huge improvement over your very first post . I am sure that you will enjoy this configuration very much. And even more so when you add an EP600 (or at least a 500) . You can go into interior decorating now, eh?
Posted By: tomtuttle Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 05/14/07 03:50 AM
Ooooh Freaking Aaaaah!!

Whoa. How long did THAT take?

Very nice, indeed.

Too much toe-in on the mains.

It'll be great. Welcome back home.
Posted By: Mojo Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 05/14/07 03:57 AM
That's perfect toe-in if you want the sweet spot all to yourself in the middle of the couch .

Quiet, we must not talk about them. Besides they just fell off. They well "Fragile" ...hmm, "must be italian'...

It took a looooooooooooooooooooong time. This is the fruits of all my procrastination from schoolwork in the past few weeks. Yeah, I thought the toe in was a bit much too.
Posted By: Seattlelite Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 05/14/07 06:05 PM
Sweet. The layout is much better now. Plus now you can watch TV while having dinner
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Google sketchup plan with M80's. - 05/14/07 07:50 PM
And, by using a strategically located mirror, you can even watch TV while washing dishes.

That's right. You don't really need both hands to hold a remote control, but wouldn't it be difficult to wash dishes with only one hand?

It looks super.

So when are you going to order the speakers? Are you getting EP500 or 600? I like to see if there would be a mini earthquake between Woodinville and Mill Creek everytime you turn up the sub.

I'm planning on ordering the speakers in a week or so when I get back home. I gotta do this whole graduation thing first, then the fun begins. I figure if we cordinate our systems at the same time, we could disturb the fault line and set off that hundred year earthquake that they keep saying is due. Then I could could collect on the insurance and build myself a new house... Actually, nevermind, that would suck because then I would have to do whole new sketchup plan.
I know this is blasphemy, but I was actually leaning toward a HSU sub when I get one sometime down the road.

I guess Woodinville would be saved then since the epicenter is only at my house
