Sony just issued a new firmware update, it ads upscaling of DVD video to 720P/1080i/1080P. Playstation 3
I'll have to see how this compares to the Toshiba HD-XA2.

You’ll be disappointed. The 1080P/24 doesn’t work with my video processor either, which is something that I’ve been looking forward to for a while now. My VP wont process it, or even pass it to the projector. …….bummer. That new Samsung BR player looks very promising if Samsung will issue a firmware update to fix the 7.1 Lossless audio problem it’s having.

I'm not crazy about the Ps3 as it stands, Imo they have one decent game and the blutooth really irritates me. Although it gives a good HD picture and I use it for SACD I think a stand-alone is in my future.

Ya I hear ya, too bad there isn’t a universal blue tooth remote. That would be way cool….

The PS3, in my opinion is still the best BR player there is though. It’s the only one that supports the lossless PCM tracks without issue, and plays back BR in 1080P/24. No others do both. The Samsung 1200 is the first one that MIGHT eventually, plus is a great SD/DVD player on par with the X2.

I’m thinking in about six months there will be more available and I’ll jump then. Heck, I just bought a Toshiba HD-A2 from Amazon for $235 (shipped) and got two free HD/DVD’s from Amazon and five more from Toshiba. Figuring in the HD disks, I basically got the A2 for free. Blue Ray will not be far behind with getting cheap players to market.

Hmm, I hope I don't have this problem when I upgrade my plasma.

Mike, I'm surprised you didn't go with the XA2, Imo the Reon video processing was well worth the extra expense.

I use a DVDO VP-50 external video processor and an SDI modified Oppo 981 for SD/dvd, so I don't need the Reon. The VP-50 is arguably the best VP made for SD available that's under $10,000. (it's $3000 MSRP)

I actually don't mind watching normal DVDs on the PS3 now. I've mainly been using it for SACD, CD, and Blu-ray playback.

Yeah, I didn't care for Resistance: Fall of Man (although I'll admit I didn't get that far into it), and I haven't seen any other games that look at all interesting. I think I'll do without video games for a little while (since my Xbox 360 is out of commission) and concentrate on the last pieces of my home theater. Piece by piece, I'm getting there.

The thing that made me sad about the PS3 firmware update was that they added media streaming support. I was so excited when I saw a Windows Media Player, and then I browsed out to one of my music folders only to find that it won't play back losslessly compressed WMAs. That's 99% of my music collection! Here's hoping that will be in the next update.
