Hey all, been a while sice I've been around but I purchase an M8- system about a year ago now and have been loving it.

I just purchased a new KDS-60a3000 TV to replace my dinosaur of Toshiba RPTV CRT. After reading a ton of info over at AVS it seems most people are saying it's a bad idea to put any weight on top of these sets as it can lead to geometry issues.

I know you can put the center channel below the TV and flip it over so that it angles up towards the seating area. My problem is that the recommended stand height for this set is only 17-22 inches or so and my coffee table as that high. Which means in my head the center will be firing in to the cofee table.

Am I better off trying to mount a shelf or something above the TV? Or am I making to much of this issue putting it below.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

How far away from the TV is the coffee table?

It's a huge coffee table at 35" x 58". The TV would be a little over 3 feet from the Coffee table. I can get a pick up with my current TV if it helps.

You may get some reflection issues with that coffee table. In my previous HT set-up my center channel was below the TV angled slightly up, and I had a coffee table right in the way.

Here is a Pic of my current setup showing the coffee table in relation to everything else.

Duane, I'd be putting a little wedge under the back of that VP150 and get it a little more angled toward the listening area; as it sits right now it is shooting over the top of your heads.

Definitely, I would try angling it down a bit. I don't know, coffee tables are huge reflective surfaces and don't think they bode well for HT. However, not many of us have the luxury of dedicated rooms and need to make do with what we can. I think you're better off with the VP150 on top angling down.

It actually usually has a wood shim under it angling it a little more but I was moving everything around today to take measurements for the new TV.

Thamks for the advice though!

To be clear that pic is of my current setup, I've got a new sony SXRD rig coming on Thursday and I've been told putting any weight on the top of it is not a good idea as it can gradually cause the chasis to bow and cause geometry issues.

I am going to have to buy a TV stand anyway so finding one that has room for the vp150 is no problem, but I'm just concerned that it's just going to fire in to the coffee table and screw everything up.

It's amazing how quickly one forgets I forgot you were expecting....

You could move the center channel out in front of your current set up on a make shift stand to the same height as the table to see if it causes a problem. If not you are good to go for any position, if a problem arises then I would look for a new stand that has a bridge across the top and set the center up there.

I have seen a few designs for center channel stands that slide under the TV stand and reach high enough, and out far enough with a shelf to set the center channel on; something like a very short engine hoist or those moveable bed tables in hospitals.

Depending on what stand you have coming with the TV you may be able to fit it on the shelf under the stand.

I have a 61" LCOS RPTV and am considering either mounting a VP150 over top of the set with a FMB on the wall or maybe using the VP stand as it will fit nicely with my stand just below the screen, but above my components.

I'd say hang yours off the wall behind the set with a bracket.

I use the FMB that Al mentioned. BTW, my speakers are no longer toed in like that.

And I see your beaver on the mantle

Looking at the dimensions diagram it looks like it's 8.5inches from the bottom of the base to the actual viewable screen. The Vp150 is only 7.5 inches tall so i guess it could go in front if i get a stand that is deep enough. Not sure where the IR receiver is on it though this setup may block it.

I'll probably see what kind of shelf/bracket I can find local to put it above the set. I know that if I put one of my M80's even slightly in an area the edge of the couch blocks i can notice a difference so I think the coffee table will probably block it enough to bug me.

My beaver has since found a more practical home as you know \:\) .

I need to track down another beaver like that, just so I'm as cool.

Ditto on ctown. VP150 on a FMB behind and above the new set.
