Hey guys,

Haven't been on here in a while. I'm currently finishing the basement where my main HT will reside. However, it won't be ready until next fall (likely). When it's done, I plan on moving my M60s (unless I go 80s) & QS8s down from the family room and am leaning towards Outlaw pre with 5 or 7 M200 amps.

Now my current needs... my current receiver (HK AVR30) will be on stereo duty in the gym so I need something for the main floor family room. It will be driving the M60s and QS8s which might eventually be replaced by M22/QS4 setup.

OK, here's the question... what is the difference between the Onkyo 605 and 705... besides the 10wpc? I'm looking for something rather cheap, that will still be able to pump out decent volume (family room is over 4,000 cubic/ft - plus open area at the end). However, I'm more worried about new technology (DTS, Dolby Digital, etc) which my old HK lacks. In the future, action movies and heavier stuff will be watched in basement. This will be mostly for TV, and a few softer movies.

I'm ready to buy the 705, but could put the $200 difference in the kids college fund if the 605 will do the job.

Thanks,
R

Rocky, it has been a while, but good to hear from you again. The power difference between the two should be of very little to no significance in real world operation and therefore shouldn't be of significance in the purchasing decision.

As to the features, probably you should study them carefully on the Onkyo site or at a dealer's site(e.g., Crutchfield)which lists them in detail. However, to name some significant differences: first, the 705 has the Audyssey MultEQ XT setup/equalizer rather than the 2EQ. This provides for up to eight measuring positions rather than two plus the center and also equalizes the sub, which the 2EQ doesn't. Both of these factors should lead to better equalization, especially in the low bass, where rooms typically need it most.

Others that could be mentioned would include three rather than two HDMI inputs and a full set of pre-outs. My view would be to go with the 705. As I also deal with estate planning and other financial matters in my practice, however, I'd certainly encourage building up that college fund as much as possible, most likely in a good equity mutual fund.

Thanks JohnK,

I totally agree about the slightly more powerful 705 not being a factor at all. I was more concerned about all the other features. At the time of posting, my browser was doing funky things and I didn't see the "compare" option on the Onkyo site. I think that the more advanced setup EQ alone is worth the extra $.

That was easy... I'm ordering the 705 right now. \:\)

Thanks,

Hi Rocky,

I am interested in the 705 as well after reading a great review of it in The Perfection Vision. I was wondering where you were getting it? Online or locally? I am in BC and looking for the best place to purchase it!

Bought it online... ebay store. I think it's ewarehouse or something. Seems like a kid who buys out stock from companies that go under. I don't know if the warranty will hold, but at half the price of a new unit here (paid $559), I was ready to take a chance... I guess same as buying used. I read a bunch of feedback on his site and everyone seems very pleased with their purchases there.
