I'm set on the Epic 80, 7.1 (HG Cherry) and cannot wait.

Initially, to save some money, my plan is not to replace my existing sub, which at the time I bought it a few years ago was a real workhorse... It's an Earthquake Supernova MKV-12, a 75 lb monster that can really shake the room.

Despite all that, I'm wondering if it's a mistake not to upgrade the sub as well? The main factor driving the decision not to is cost, but I'm starting to wonder how much I'll miss out on by not having a sub that was built to integrate with the rest of the system.

I've got a < 2500 square foot enclosed room, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be quite happy adding 7 Axioms to the room and retaining the existing sub. I'm sure there are others in this situation and I'd appreciate your own experiences/advice on integrating non-Axiom subwoofers into Axiom sound from the rest of the speakers.

Thanks for the input.

Jason

You could always get the new sub for the trial and check it out. Then if you like it, add it to the old sub and have 7.2.

Definitely an option, but if the goal is to save money am I making a major mistake not having a fully integrated system? I don't really know which sub I'd need for my room, but any of the upper end subs would require another large cash outlay.

If it's a major drawback not having an Axiom sub, I'll definitely consider it. If there are others out there enjoying the system without the Axiom sub, I'd love to hear about it. I'm 99% certain that at some point in the future I'll do exactly what StuntGibbon suggests... just not immediately as the plan stands now, unless you all convince me it's idiotic what I have planned. ;\)

I have M80s and an old 10" sub that is now where near the likes of yours and it works reasonably well with the Axioms, all be it undr powered. You should be able to get your sub to integrate reasonably well, if not perfectly, with some adjustments. You may need to set the sub up using the subs crossover as well as the receivers crossover ie. both set to 40hz, and you may need to move the sub around the room to find the best spot. Lots of people are using non Axiom subs with good results, after all the low frequencies are more felt than heard.

I have an outlaw sub which works very well with the 80's in a 5.1 system. As jakewash says the setup and crossovers need to be set according to each room. I'm sure you'll find your sweet spot and be enjoying the great set up.

I would use you're present sub, it will do just fine.

one vote here for saving money and keeping the sub.

Down the line if you want to buy an axiom sub to have everything match then you always can.

Thanks... I'm leaning that way too. What's funny is that I think the main reason I want to spend the $ now is to get a sub in that beautify HG Cherry finish. ;\)

Just as an aside... if I were to break the bank and get a sub, how does one go about picking the right sub for the room size, or are there other factors I should be considering for sub choice?

You don't have all that big of a room. If you like the EQ sub keep it in the system if not sell it and get the 500 or 600 Axiom sub. The EQ should work great with the M80s. I use a Hsu sub with great results.

Thanks Rick... about 4 weeks and counting until it all comes together.
