For those of you with both the PS3 and this Denon, do you choose to have the PS3 do the upconversion before outputting to the Denon, or do you disable PS3 upconversion and have the Denon do the upconversion?

I played with it a bit this morning and it looked like maybe the Denon did a little better job, but I haven't experimented long enough on different source material to form a solid opinion yet.

Curious what others think...

Thanks,

Jason

Not much difference to my eye.

I think you can only see differences on screens larger then 70"

Projectors is where good upconversion matters!

I'v put away all my DVDs and now only buy BLURAY's

On my 130" wall screen you can see a huge difference from BluRay and upconverted DVDs

Thanks for the answer, but that actually wasn't my question... Sorry if my question wasn't clear.

I am comparing SD DVDs upconverted either:

a) through the PS3's upconversion to 1080P
b) through the Denon's upconversion to 1080P

I have a 1080P projector as well displayed on a 92" fixed screen. I totally agree that Blu-Ray is the way to go, but when I watch my older SD DVDs, I was curious which device people prefer to do their upconversion.

Thanks.

Well, since you own both, I'd say use the one you feel does the better job. But since you're asking the question it would appear that there's not a noticeable difference, so I'd use whichever is convenient. Just my 2 cents.

Ok, that's three of us saying the same thing now, it must be official, they're both about the same. \:\)

For now I have the PS3 doing it... The only reason being if I let the Denon do it, the PS3 menus and GUIs look out of proportion. If the PS3 does it, they look a lot crisper.

i have the same setup, but i haven't or tryed hard enough to figure out how to disable one or the other. i'll have to play around some more.

Somewhere in the denon you can change how it handles up conversion... Not sure if applies to 1080p or not, bu when I set my denon to upconvert my SD cable from 480i->720p the default tried to stretch the 4:3 image to fit my tv, I had to manually disable it so that I could watch SD in 'pillar box' form.

There may be some type of setting that will let you tweek things so they don't look 'out of porportion'

I can only comment that my Denon's up-conversion was so inferior to my Toshiba HD player's up-conversion of SDVDs that I now wonder if it was ever really working on the Denon. Note, mine is an older model, 3608.

Yep, the Toshiba probably has better hardware in it for the upconversion. From a quick look at the 3806 product info, I don't think it has the same hardware as the 3808.

Even the 3808 is a little dated as far as upconversion hardware (Faroudja chip versus Reon, the latter is supposedly the best now). Judging by the similarity in output, the PS3 and 3808 might be using similar hardware for the processing.

myrison, I think their is a better chip than the reon now- I think it is called the realta. Denon uses it in its top of the line $2,000 bluray player, their $7,00 processor, and the top of the line $5000+ receiver.

Yep, the Realta HQV is the big brother to the Reon and I am almost certain the Realta is where Denon is heading towards for their receivers, totally bypassing the Reon. Either that or they figured all the players will have the upscalers in them so there isn't much need for one(the Reon or Realta) in the receiver due to somewhat extra cost compared to the much cheaper and older DCDi.
