So I noticed this a while back and happened to stumble across it again... Apparently JL audio has a dual 12" fathom sub out now.

I heard the Gotham at a local store and was VERY impressed, but what less would one expect from a $12,000 sub? (I don't think it was worth that much... not with my salary at least!)

The Dual fathom comes in only at a mere $6,000 ;\) . I am just wondering how something like this would compare to the ep800. Just taking a quick look at the specs, it seems that the fathom has a 3000 watt amp, significantly more than the ep800. Also, the weight is about double.

Anyway, I highly doubt that anyone has had a chance to compare these subs... and likely most of us here haven't heard EITHER the 800 or F212 like myself. I guess I am just wondering at what point are you just blowing your money for more sub than you need. I would hope that for nearly triple the price the fathom 212 would have an edge over the 800... but I highly doubt it would be "three times better". It seems that with audio gear (and many other items) once you reach a certain point you have to start paying MUCH more for slight improvements. Who knows the fathom may not even have any edge over the 800.. in that case it obviously wouldn't be worth the extra price tag.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea. If we split the cost up amongst All of the forum members I would be glad to do some testing. Now testing of this magnitude will be more like a 20 year case study... so yeah if you are intested let me know ;\)

Sure. But before the tests I'll need them for a short ten year break in period.

I would suspect under most listening conditions the 800 and the JL would be virtually identical, but for sheer output the 3000W would trump the Axioms meager output. I believe in your rather large room the JL would be an improvement over a single 800, but triple 800's would probably be about the same. \:\)

Let us know how the testing goes with a JL and triple 800's ;\)

My room is not very big... 2250 CF, but I would still love to cram 3 ep800's into it!

You wouldn't much room left ;\)

I can always just put one on the seat where my fiance usually sits...the other two can go up front!

Bah, who needs to sit in the room? Fill it up with EP800s and enjoy from next door.

David, you get the horizontal version and put it under the seat so that the next fiancee has a place to sit. \:\)

3000 watts??? Normally I would call BS, but I have some experience with JL and they can build an amp. Unless they decided to go a new direction, coupling a 3000 watt JL amp with some of their mega w7 drivers would make for a damned strong offering.

Makes my little B&W sub with 200 watts seem even more puny.
