Hello all..

Im just about to crack fill the gyprock in my downstairs rec room. Im planning on getting a set of qs8's. My question is where would the speaker placement be better suited? At the rear of room or on side walls near the rear of the room. Room is 15 wide by 21 long. I dont plan on going to a 6.1 set up so it will be just the two rear speakers. My ceiling is 8 feet tall but on one wall I have duck work boxed in that runs the length of the room so I loose 3 feet width on that side which comes down about 1 foot then back towards the side wall for the full 15 feet. My rear couch will be about 6 feet from the back of the room so will the speaker placement be better suited at the rear of the room ( 6 feet from couch ) or near the back but on the side walls???? What have you all done?

Bruce, place the QS8s on the sidewalls about 2-3' above ear level and a little(say 2')farther back than directly to the side of the listening position.

Hi Bruce,

For a 5.1 setup, the proper terminology is "side surrounds". The "rears" are only added when you have 6.1 or 7.1. As John mentioned, the best position is 2-3' above ear level, or higher. Mine are 7ft off of the ground and they work great.

Since you have a 21ft long room, why not consider running wiring for a possible future 6.1 or 7.1 setup, wire is cheap? In my opinion using Dolby PLIIx modes on receivers is great. Also, with the new HD formats for Bluray, it might be something to think about.

If you have 6ft of clearance from the back wall, I don't see why you could not go 6.1 or 7.1. My rear Qs8 speakers are only 2ft behind my rear row of seats, and probably 7ft from the front row.
