Floorstanding vs in-cabinet speakers

Hi everyone,

I just received my Epic 80/350 this afternoon. I can't wait to plug all the components and watch, or should I say "listen", my favourite movie. Like I said in a previous post, the M80's and the VP150 are inside a cabinet. Before yeaterday, I never noticed Axiom has speakers designed specifically for in-cabinet design. So my question is, what are the differences between the standard floorstanding speakers and the in-cabinet speakers? Should I expect my floorstanding speakers to sound very much like the in-cabinet models or is there a huge difference between the two?

AFAIK, the in cabinet models have only front mounted ports, and there are some other clear design differences (cabinet shape, perhaps?), but other than that, I'm not sure what other design changes were made.

I believe they're also designed for flush mounting, not for sitting behind doors that will be opened.

As Kcarlile pointed out, the in-cabinet M80 has front-mounted ports, but it also has a front baffle that protrudes slightly from the cabinet into which it is mounted. The sound quality is essentially identical (I do the listening tests) and the slightly protruding front baffle is done to remove the adjacent boundary effects that would otherwise skew the response if the M80 were completely flush-mounted. The depth of the cabinet and internal volume is identical to the standard floor-standing M80.

That's wild, I've never seen those on the website before either. Can those be used as 'in-wall' speakers? That would be absolute tits!!!

You could. When I mentioned that once here, someone (I don't remember who) had a very good idea. You can create a fake wall that could contain the speakers and closets for all your equipment and media (disks...).

I'm guessing they are a bit too deep to actually be used as in-walls eh. I sort of wish I would have seen those before, I might have designed my HT closet a bit differently to accomodate them! Not that I'm not happy with what I have now mind you, but I would have probably given it some thought.
