Fried my amp with comfortly numb; Pink Floyd dvd this week end.
Need a replacemnt at a $500.00 price point.
Found a onkyo TX-SR607 for $400.00 review s look good.
Not to worried about video switching. Need good sound with plenty of power.
Driving M80's+center+q4+rears.
Also looked @ pionneer 1019 as well Denon 790/1910
Onkyo seems to be best bang for the buck.
Any thought/suggestions welcomed thanks

Hmm, I'm not sure you can get "good sound with plenty of power" for $500 price range. The "plenty of power" is pretty subjective I guess. My idea of loud and power is pretty wimpy for some of the folks around here! ;\)

Have you thought about used equipment? Perhaps Marantz 7001 or 8001? The former is probably in your price and the latter just a bi more expensive.

I think going with used equipment might give you the best bang for the buck.

A Denon 1910 looks to sell for between $440 to $500 in the US w. free shipping.

try http://www.6ave.com and call them about their denon prices.

PB, condolences on your 885's passing. There're several Denon and Onkyo models in particular which would be suitable. Yes, the Onkyos might offer a bit more bang for the buck. The 607 would be a good choice, but even better at well within your budget would be the factory refurb 706. It's available at the moment(still on but apparently ending tonight)from ShopOnkyo for about $420 with free shipping. Enrolling in "Club Onkyo" entitles you to the $480 sale price plus 10% off and a $10 credit, which gets down to about $420. Accessories4less has the 706 for about $450.

Have you put any thought into a budget receiver that has pre-outs and then adding a 2 channel amp for the M80's. A receiver alone might not be the answer to supply "plenty of power" to your listening environment. It is probably one reason you fried your Denon to begin with. How big is your room?

onkyo's have been known to have problems with m80's even the thx ones.(which is weird) I would stick with denon. ;\)

As much as I like Pioneer, the 1019 isn't a receiver to buy. They added iPhone support, and nothing else worthwhile, and then removed some power. But if you can find a 1018 on the cheap, it may be worth looking at (and it does have pre-outs).

You could also simply look at having your Denon repaired. I fried my 3808 very badly and it was only $250 to repair.

His went Comfortably Numb though. So I think he is looking more at rehab, which could be costly if his health insurance doesn't cover amps.

The 2310 has a more powerful amp than the 1910, better video procesor (I know you don't really care) and another HDMI input... Was worth the difference to me.

JohnK thanks for the sage advise.
I went with the Onkyo and think that I could add a amp to the fronts if this is a problem later.
I let you all know the outcome, stay tuned.

Some have mentions adding a second amp just for the front, I understand this can be done with this amp, any recommendation about that?

My FRIEND i SHOULD GO WITH crown.,

Paul, the recommendation is to do what you indicated in your previous post: you can consider a separate amplifier later if a problem develops. You're getting an excellent receiver in the 706, including plenty of power at 4 ohms for that part of the frequency range where the M80s are 4 ohms(for the majority of the range they're 8 ohms). It's got enough to do the job in the vast majority of home audio applications and you shouldn't spend any time(or money)at this point worrying that it might not do it for you.

OK thanks John I can't wait to get this thing, I have heard anything about shipping yet, hopefully soon.
Posted By: libirm Re: fried my denon avr 885 - 11/07/09 12:39 PM
Well it is delivered, installed and yes tested with...yes you got it Pink Floyd, Pulse, Comfortably numb.
Well the 706 is amazing, i might be that it is new or newer technology, but I think it sounds better and makes the Axiom's come alive!!!!
Well for now I take John's advice and enjoy the music!
Thanks to all for their help, mission accomplished.

Glad to hear things worked out. I hate being without music.

Side note: What kind of drums you banging in your avatar. I see a mike for vocals but the picture isn't clear enough to determine your celebrity status. \:\)

Those drums are a set of Mapex,no status here, just old rockin-roller playing at the beach in NY.
Graet fun that was, thanks for asking.

Question on the 706...
What is being represented when the amp goes to "0" then to +1,+2 ect.
Could you explain? Is it a represntation of how power the amp is using?

congrats on the new reciever the onkyo's are really great. they don't look like much but they really do sound amazing. I have the tx-sr 607 and it has been compared in sound to the DENON 3808 quoted from here:

http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers/onkyo-tx-sr607-black/4505-6466_7-33553470-2.html?tag=txt;page
Audio performance

"Moving our Aperion system back to a traditional surround sound setup, we found the TX-SR607's sound quality was well above average for its price class, and comparisons with our reference Denon AVR 3808CI receiver ($1,699 MSRP) were too close to call. The two receivers sounded alike, at moderate volume. Cranking the volume way up, the Denon had the edge, as the Onkyo couldn't quite keep up when driven that hard. That's no surprise, though, considering the Denon is more than twice the price of the Onkyo"

you have the model above mine so i can only imagine. the select 2 must be nice. AND YOU PAID LESS THAN ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..

anyways back to your question... what do you mean by 0,+1...etc. is the 706 showing db's for volume? cause the 607 doesn't. It just goes up from 0-79... i do miss the db reading though - like in most other recievers, but i just couldn't justify that being the reason for my purchase.

im also glad to here you can run the M80's. i unfortunately don't want to chance it, since it runs warm as it is and isn't really in an open place. and im only rated for 6ohms and above.

Paul, for receivers where the volume control goes from say -80 to +20 rather than from 0 to 100, the 0 setting is typically used for calibrating movies to "reference level"(most consider this to be too loud for home listening and use maybe -10 or less). The volume control is a variable resistor which controls the amount of the incoming voltage from the source material which is let through to be amplified. At the maximum setting, regardless of whether the scale is - to + or 0 to max, essentially all of the incoming voltage is let through to be amplified by the fixed gain factor of the amplifier. So, if the voltage coming in from different source materials happens to be at the same level, equal settings on the volume control result in equal power output and equal loudness. If the source materials have different voltage outputs the net power output from the amplifier at a given volume control setting will vary in proportion.

Have to laugh at those reviews, of course the 607 sounded as good as the 3808 at lower volumes, so do the lower priced Denon's etc.. You are paying, and at a premium I might add, for a few extra bells and whistles and slightly higher wattage/power output, which is why the 3808 sounded better at higher volumes.

Thanks again for the help in understanding.

Hey I will add that I think the onkyo does sound better then the denon I had, maybe because it is newer tech.
But I could not be happier, I do play it LOUD, I think the music sound great!
Just in case any one was wondering.

By the way is he a way to get emailed when someone post on a string?
