Can anyone advise on the Sherwood Newcastle R872.
I have the EPIC 60-500 7.1 system and like to view action films and rock concerts, but find the receiver doesn't have the guts to drive the speakers very well. I have performed the setup, but find almost full volume to be very unfulfilling. Source is a Sony PS3 linked via an HDMI cable. I'm just not getting the performance from the front two speakers.

I'm not sure how many guys here own SN receivers, Denon seems to be the most popular overall. You should be OK with the SN though, unless you are trying to run it beyond it's capabilities and running the reciever into clipping. Do you have an extremely large room? how loud is loud? room acoustics affecting sound?
Yes how big is your room bub? I too have a rather largish room, and while exploring the Sherwood Newcastle R772 (same power specs I think) I also ran into problems in the upper range of the volume control. As mentioned my Denon handled my M80's (which require even more power than your M60's) much better. But I'm a power nut, so I went with an external amp. The R872 has pre-outs, so you could go with an external amp as well.
Of course there are a lot of things to explore first to see if you can get the performance you're looking for. But if you really like to listen to your music/movies LOUD, then you may need to look into external amplification.
The SN should drive the 60's to very loud levels before any clipping shows up, how big is your room? Do you have an SPL meter, what dB's are you listening to?
Tim, welcome. It would be more helpful if specific dB level measurements rather than general terms such as "guts" and "unfulfilling" were used. While the 872 wouldn't be one of my top suggestions, it should drive the M60s easily to the limit of safe listening levels unless you're sitting very far away.
Thanks so far. I used the Axiom calculator to match speakers to room and it's just under 2000 cubic feet. I don't know how to measure db levels but I can have the volume control at +12 to +15 and +17 is full volume. It's loud but you could still have a conversation over it though. Doesn't seem to be any clipping so I'm wondering if the receiver is not set up correctly or has a fault.
Does anyone get a sort of mechanical clank when switching inputs or switching channels when watching TV?
I asked Sherwood about this and they said it was perfectly normal and to use the shortest HDMI leads as I could i.e. 4 feet. Never heard any other receiver making this noise.

The clanking, would be the relays turning on and off individual channels. Not every receiver does this, but many do. It wasn't noticed so much before, because TVs were connected by stereo RCA jacks which always had two channels. But now with S/PDIF or HDMI the channel count is known and can vary from program to program. These changes causes the receiver to reconfigure itself. It is perfectly normal, even if it is distracting.
I know exactly what you're talking about Tim, yes the Sherwood is VERY loud when switching from one thing to the next. I could hear the Denon switching over as well, but it always seemed to only be coming from the reciever itself, the Sherwood sends that sound out through the speakers as well for some reason. When I had the volume up getting ready for a movie and I switched it over it sounded as if it was going to break my QS8's! So try to keep the volume down while changing things over.
Wow. That is bad. I always thought that the reason the receivers switched off channels was to keep pops from hitting the speakers.

Ok seriously, the Sherwood I was refering to was the R772. Maybe it's just a trait of that model, or perhaps it was just a fluke in the particular unit I recieved?
