Hiya,

Putting together a 14.5Lx16.5Wx10.5H 2,500cu.ft. dedicated HT room, so I'm pulling my B&W THX FCM8 LCR(3pc) & SCM8 dipoles(2pcs)out of storage for it. Thinking of driving them with either an Onkyo 805 THX ultra, or Rotel rsp1066/rmb1075 THX ultra combo. Regretfully I never got the matching dual passive B&W PCS8 subs, nor the B&W 800ASW subs, both THX ultra too, but i think 2 are required. Anyways, I've always wondered if my single EP-500v2 would meet or exceed THX ultra requirements for spl and frequency response for the room size. Waddya think?

Thanks a bundle!

The EP500 is a very capable subwoofer but not knowing the THX Ultra standards I couldn’t say if it meets them. Could you post a link to the THX Ultra standards? AFAIK THX is pretty tight lipped about their requirements.

I would not get all hung up on THX this THX that, having the THX logo (like on receivers) doesn't say the other non-labeled THX receivers would not qualify for THX. In regards to the 500, it is capable of 18hz in-room and capable of 120dB undistorted.

I doubt it would be possible to tell whether THX standards are met, unless THX has certified the equipment (for a hefty fee). But I'm not sure of that for THX Ultra, specifically. It's been one of the complaints about THX that they keep their requirements secret.

I can appreciate not getting caught up in THX, I share the same feelings. But... it would be really cool if money was no object to get THX to come out and certify your own personal home theatre. That would be a pretty cool plaque to hang outside the doors, I wonder what that would cost!

The way THX certifications go, you could probably just send them the check and they'll send the plaque saying you're certified.

About $20, just make your own plaque. No less valid than THX certification IMO.

But then you get a 50K$ lawsuit for trademark infringement! \:\)

You think like a Marine Cam.

Just make sure not to invite any THX employees over for a movie and I’m pretty sure you’d sail right under their radar.

ROFL! \:D I was just wondering if I would be missing anything with my Ep500 compared to the other THX certified subs out there.

BTW I don't know if I'm allowed to post this without permission, but here's something I grabbed off youtube showing measurements of a THX certified cinema very nearby. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD-422ffiMs

Yes. You'll be missing a little silkscreened logo on the sub that says 'THX'. ;\)

Got myself a pair of B&W PCS8 passive THX subs, which I power using a Parasound HCA 1200mk2. IMHO I prefer the SQ of my single EP500v2, but experienced the improved bass distribution of dual subs. I think I'll sell these for a 2nd EP500v2, but only if I can find a prestine and identical black circa 1998 EP500v2. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I don't think they were making them in 1998.

I have the Klipsch promedia 2.1 on my computer and they are THX certified. While they sound good for what I paid for ($100 used), it's nothing out of this world so I agree that the THX cert doesn't mean much. Plus, you having all your individual equipment THX approved doesn't mean nothing if you're not following all the THX placement and room treatment rules which for most is not practical.

My bad, 2008. The amp without the 3 round fuse holders near the power switch.

Anyone?

Have you contacted Axiom? They may have an old amp from a return that they could build you a new looking one from scratch. That may be the only way to find a “pristine” one. Also keep an eye on the auction site I think I’ve seen one pop up there. I’ve seen a couple on sale at various other forums like AVS. Also keep an eye on AudiogoN.

Is there a reason besides the trim control on the amp you want a “v2?” With the DSP circuitry the performance should be nearly identical with “v3.” I could understand you needing another “v2” if you use the trim control, I found/find it very effective in two different rooms.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: single EP500v2 meets THX ultra? - 05/21/11 02:35 PM
since there have been some minor problems with earlier versions of the EP amps, I would prefer a newer model. As Grunt asked, why? the amps should be very similar.
Posted By: obsi Re: single EP500v2 meets THX ultra? - 05/22/11 07:36 AM
I very much like the flexibility of the trim control, especially if i have to move the sub to a smaller room later on. Aside from the problems of the V2 I've read here lately, I could've sworn I read more problems with the V3 amp before. I also personally don't care much for the RCA/phono adapter inputs and vent holes on the V3.

Been checking other forums and audiogon to no avail so the search goes on. Will also try to contact axiom if they have enough spares to rig me up an identical V2.

What don't you like about the vent holes?
Posted By: obsi Re: single EP500v2 meets THX ultra? - 05/22/11 05:17 PM
I just prefer the old simple holeless look I guess...nowhere for roaches to find their way in grin

Anyway, personal preferences aside, I just want and identical twin if still available anywhere, it's an obsi thing... wink
