I'm always interested in what people's next HT purchase is, so I thought it would be nice to have one thread where people can list what has their attention at the moment. It could help bring to light products I haven't heard of before, and it would be interesting to track the trends. Maybe this thread already exists. I keep getting a sense of déjà vu when I post things lately.

The VP180 has my interest. I'm thinking I'll end up with one later this year, at least to trial. I feel like the M22 is doing its job as my center, but I'm still curious how much fuller the VP180 might sound. I'm still a little hesitant about getting a horizontal center.

I would like my next major purchase to be a projector, but I'm not sure what will be out when I'm finally able to buy one. 3D seems like fun, but I think I'd opt for a larger screen over a TV that does 3D, at least for a few generations. I still like my current TV, but 60" simply isn't keeping up with my sound system anymore. Ha ha. I don't think I'll ever spend more than $3000 on a display again. I spent $4k for my current TV, and while I like it a lot, I'd rather spend less and get newer models more regularly.

The preamp-processor I want doesn't exist yet. Ideally, I would be able to choose between Audyssey MultEQ XT or Trinnov processing in a single unit, and I would like the EQ to be able to correct up to four subs individually. I would also like to be able to run both height and wide speakers simultaneously. Obviously, if it's going to be this extreme, I'm going to want all of the other expected features. I would like 7 or more HDMI inputs. GUI as on overlay is always a plus. Media streaming with support for FLAC would be great. Downloadable firmware and feature updates. Onkyo/Integra usually comes the closest in number of features I want (at a price I can afford), but even they're not there yet.

Those are the things I want most at this point. What's on your list?
Here’s my list Charles along with the reason I don’t have it yet.

- HDMI KVM switch. (laziness)
- Wireless Keyboard + mouse. (laziness)
- Faster internet connection. (laziness, want but don’t quite need yet)
- Swing out wall bracket for HDTV. (laziness)
- Room treatments. (laziness)
- Bass EQ system (testing one soon) ;\)
- New surround back speakers, second subwoofer. (laziness, prefer to have 11.3 receiver)
- Receiver w/ full 11.3, at least 2 saves for configurations. (cost, just bought a new receiver)
- A better network storage solution. (laziness, hating hard drives = cost)
- Telescope flocking for ceiling and edges of front speakers. (laziness)
- Black Carpet. (laziness)
- 2x20 amp dedicated power lines to media room. (laziness, don’t quite need yet)

- Midbass modules? (laziness, more important things to get)
- 1 to 3 VP180s depending on how they sound vertically? (cost, laziness, need more info)

As you can see I’m a very lazy person. The comfort zone can be deadly.
I like this thread...

In the last three weeks I picked up the following:

Just upgraded my receiver: Denon 4810(had a 2808)
Blu-Ray player: Oppo BDP-83.
Line Conditioner: Panamax M5300-PM.
M2 inwall speakers.
M22 inwall speakers.

Next up on the Need/Want/Gotta have list:
1. Center Channel: VP-180(sometime in June)
2. Upgrade of my M60'S to M80'S (shortly after #1)
3. Subwoofer (after the wedding in October)
4. Universal remote (after the wedding in October)

The way I see it, by the time the year ends I will have upgraded every piece of my system except my 61"Elite..:)
Recently purchased Axiom Algonquins.. just waiting for them to arrive.

Looking into new front speakers. Currently not happy with my Energy Veritas 2.3 On my list to audition are:

Acoustic Zen Addagio
Canton Ergo 695 DC
Focal Chorus 836V

And Axiom M80s

My cousin has a pair of M80s which I will borrow for a few days to see how they sound in my room. They sound great at his place, but totally different size / shape of room.
This is first year I had a more decent HT. Last year and for the past 5 years before that it was a Sony HTIB with the small satellite speakers mounted on the wall in 5.1. I plan on doing the living room with TV and my largest (12x13.5x8) bedroom with projector. Living room almost done with 3.1, ordered EP175 in Cinnamon Beech and still waiting to see if it will be sufficient. Also, I've replaced the circuit breaker box and breakers so that I have some open circuits for dedicated lines. Yet to find and add a whole house surge protector at the breaker box.

Currently in living room:
on-wall W22.
on/In wall WP100 (Would like to replace with on/In wall VP150, black oak).
EP175 on order.
Samsung 37inch LN37B550. (Would like to replace with 46-47 inch).
Pioneer STX-21THX 7.1 receiver.
Panasonic DMP-BD30 blu-ray player (Would like a newer version).
Monster HDP-1800 Power conditioner/surge protector.
Harmony 1100 remote. (Excellent remote. Works fine with 1 hand.).
(No plans for surround speakers, had to cut the cost somewhere, and have location mounting problems).
Have provided 1 20amp dedicated line for subwoofer and plan to add one more for the other equip that is hidden in another room.
Also, would like some sort of player that would hold at least 300 cd/sacd.

For bedroom HT:
W22's for LR (currently in storage).
VP180 for Center.
2 QS8 surrounds.
EP500.
Either a decent Denon receiver, or a higher end Pioneer Elite than I currently have.
Oppo BD83 blu-ray player, or better.
A good 1080p projector, such as Panasonic PTAE4000u or better.
Carada screen. Biggest that will fit in room, and allow full screen use with short throw distance.
Seating for at least 3.

Satellite systems:
I also could use some small stereo for music speakers, such as M0, M2, or M3 for treadmill location, and for either side of my fireplace. But, I'm not sure about how to go about wiring these to my AVR. Possibly with some sort of A/B/C switch? Outdoor speakers for patio use. Make that an A/B/C/D switch.

Interested in at the moment..

Beyerdynamic DT880 600ohm version
Beyerdynamic DT770
AKG K271 MKII
Cowon J3 Media Player
Studio monitors (KRK Rokit series or similarly priced Mackie monitors)
DVR
DIY subwoofer project
I am actually quite happy with the setup I have amassed. I suppose that at most, I might keep an eye on the latest codecs and try to stay current as the technology morphs. That - and I wouldn't mind being able to set independant crossovers as opposed to the generic 80hz for all speakers.
Oh my 'lust list' eh? Ok, well I was just fine with my VP150 until Steve came along! (Waves fist in air while closing one eye & squinting with the other one)... So now I want to audition the VP180, expecially if the reports are true that I can get around $350 bucks for my VP150 in the trade-up program! \:D

Besides that I'm looking to get two more QS8's for the back surrounds, and possibly another two for the front height channels... Which brings me to my next lust item, either a new reciever or a pre/pro. I've always loved Denon recievers for their ablity to split up the rear surround channels into 4 separate speakers so that combined with the side surrounds you can have a total of 6 surround speakers. But now I'm also interested in the front height channels, and I would like all of this in a fairly affordable reciever (read - $700 or less) because I'm more interested in the processing capabilities than the built in power amp. I would like to get a second Emotiva XPA-3, and run my QS8's with it and get mono-blocks for my M80's & (probably) VP180.

Which brings me to my next question, I've always had a backwards idea of the way speakers used power. I thought that you sent power to a speaker, and it used whatever power you sent to it. Now, thanks to the great minds on tap here on this site (John, Fred, Chris, Dean... just to name a few), I've come to understand electricity a little better (though I'm certainly no pro just yet). The way I understand it now, the speaker is part of a loop in the circut, and it draws power from the amp as needed. So now what I'm wondering is, how much power will an M80 draw during peaks if driven at pretty much full volume? They are rated at 400 watts, so does that mean they won't ever draw more than 400 watts? Or is that just an average?

The reason I ask is because I was talking with a guy about amps and he told me if I really wanted to run them loud, without fear of clipping EVER, then I should be looking at getting at least 1000 watt mono blocks, for each speaker. And that confused me since the 80's are rated at 400 watts. Does this mean that during peaks they could draw as much as 1000 watts, or at least somewhere close to it? And if so, that much power won't damage them, will they?

With my previous understanding of the way speakers worked I always thought if you sent 500 watts to a speaker that was only rated to handle 300, you would 'blow' that speaker. But now as far as my understanding goes, the speaker will only draw as much as it's designed to draw... am I right about that? Or do I still have some stuff to learn?
Currently I have:

Denon 2809
Denon BD1800
Sammy 6 series LCD
M80s
QS8s
VP150
P'digm DSP3400

My wish list would be:

2nd DSP3400
VP180
a projector if I build a dedicated HT
2nd set of Q's if I build ....

My OTHER wish list is:

building my own sub(s)
Building a pair of tower speakers with Vifa/Peerless woofers and SB acoustics on top
Behringer amps and DCX2496 active crossover for towers
I just want a basement. Then I want a finished basement. Only then will I start lusting for equipment.

I suppose I could lust after a 50"+ wall-mounted TV before a basement happens, though.
Micah, afraid you still have a bit to learn.

Yes, the speaker is part of the circuit, but it doesn't "draw" anything, it only impedes the flow of current supplied by the amp.

An amp, with both terminals shorted together, i.e. no speaker, just wire, would flow as much current as it could move. Something would fail, probably the output transistors, but it could also over-heat the power supply, or if it was a seriously robust amp, that much flow through the piece of wire could melt it.

What happens when you put a speaker in place, it that its has a really, long, thin piece of wire (to simplify things), that keeps the current flow under control. Speakers of higher impedance slow the flow even more. But if there's enough current, it can still put so much through the speaker that it can cause heat to build up. If you get the wire hot enough you can melt the insulation off of it, and that long, thin piece of wire starts to look more like one big lump of metal, and then other things start to break. There's also the possibility of over-extending the cone and causing physical damage that way. You ears will be telling you to turn it down before you get to that point.

The real problem is under-powered amps. Either having a speaker which can flow current more rapidly than the amp can stably provide (which will cause it to go into protection), or the amp just running out of steam and not being able to provide the highest peaks (clipping).
Right now I'm lusting after:

Blinds, dual cell, black outs. Probably from Bali Blinds.
Two air conditioners, one for my bedroom/computer room, and one for the rest of the apartment.
A Buttkicker.
A trip to Romania (doesn't really help my home theater, but helps my general mood, and thus my enjoyment of the theater).

I'm pretty sure the 400W rating of the M80's is a sustained rating, so it is entirely possible they can handle greater than 400 for peaks, but the Ti tweeters would likely blow (along with your hearing) if fed 1000W sustained.
If you're peaking at 1000 watts, you'd better have a huge room or some very, very serious earplugs.

Agreed!
Was this "guy," a salesman, by chance?
The M80s are "rated" at 400 watts, but they are stress tested at much higher levels, somewhere around 700-800 watts if I'm not mistaken.
Oh, higher than that, I think.
I've started thinking that if I replace my 46" DLP with a 55" or 58" flat screen that I wall-mount, I can use the space on top of the cabinet (where the TV sat) to put a VP-180.

Oh, and I still want 2 or 3 Outlaw monoblocks.... especially if I got a VP180! \:\)

When I toured the factory, I thought Tom or Debbie told me something like 1000 watts but I'm not sure, so I didn't want to overstate the power capabilities of the M80s. You know Micah's reading this right now and thinking to himself, "Great!! they torture these speakers at 1000 watts, so I'll go ahead and get me a 1000watt amp!"
Yes, but drivers flying across rooms are funny.

Only if he's wearing his motorcycle helmet.

Maybe he just sells VERY inefficient speakers... And big amps to make up for them of course.
I have just about everything I want, but if I could have 2 more things, I would want:

1) A 3 Channel Digital Amp rated 400W/Channel @ 4 ohms.
2) A NAS Server with Raid 5 and 4 Drive Bays.
I see that Crown has some new amps coming out that have RCA inputs.

Even the lowest price one offers 700wpc in bridged mode into 8 Ohms. Three of those puppies for M60 left, M60 right and VP180 Center oughta kick some butt...
Those look really reasonable Mark.. Do you have any experience with Crown Amps?
Here is the text from the page with the speaker testing on it:

"This room is where we test the endurance of loudspeakers under high power conditions. Our speaker "torture test" typically uses 100 hours of the heavy-metal group Slayer played continuously.

The M80s were tested with this music for 100 hours at 700 Watts continuous input power, with peaks of 1000 Watts!

We also conduct heat tests in this room, to make sure our electronics can withstand temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius / 104 degrees Fahrenheit. "

Actually, funny as this may sound, this information came from a sales rep I talked to for a company selling mono blocks I was looking at buying. They were rated at 250 watts into 8 ohms, so I called to ask if they were 4 ohm stable, and if so if the power rating went up to 500 watts... and if so would they hurt my speakers?

When I told him I had Axiom M80's he told me that I needed a more powerful amp... and I know your next question, how much was the amp he tried to sell me, right? Nope, if fact he didn't have an amp rated at 1000 watts. So to sum everything up, I called an guy selling amps, asked him questions about his amps, gave him the information about my speakers, and he told me his amps were not up to the task and that I should look elsewhere to find something more powerful to really get the most out of my speakers.

Strange? I thought so, hence the questions I posted up about it. Oh and thanks Chris, my knowledge is getting better and better in this area thanks to guys like you. Much appreciation!
That is one bizarre result right there. I wouldn't expect that from just about any salesman. I can't imagine why he would say you would need a 1kW amp for the M80s. I mean, sure, why not, but NEED?
well.. since it's a LUST list.. my "out of reach Lust list" would be:

Krell Evolution 707 pre processor
Krell Evolution One mono block (as many as I have speakers)
4 X Krell Master Reference Subs (each sub is 2X15" powered by 2600W Krell amp)
Acoustic Zen Maestro speakers
Acoustic Zen Cables

That should take care of the " sound " part of things..Not sure about the "video" part yet.. Either way, none of this gear is in reach ..my previous post is what I'm aiming for.. this is just a "dream" list

Cheers

Well, to be fair the guy never said that I NEEDED 1000 watt mono's in order to make my M80's work. It was more like a personal recommendation. His amps weren't 4 ohm stable, so he had nothing to sell me. But he said if I wanted to make absolutely sure that I never ran into clipping at high level listening, then he suggested I go with something pushing close to 1000 watts into 4 ohms. An 'insurance policy' amp of sorts.

He really did seem to be fairly knowledgable and enthusiastic about properly allowing for headroom. And he used the word 'control' quite a bit... "An amp that runs out of available dynamic headroom looses control of the audio signal", or something along those lines.

I dunno, I guess the fact that he wasn't trying to sell me any of his products seemed to give him more credibility. But maybe he was just a quack?
From personal experience, my Denon (less powerful than yours) is 4 ohm stable in three channels, in addition to being 6 ohm stable in the other 4 channels. Something isn't right.
I think it comes down to an unstable operator ;\)
my cousin powers his M80s with an Onkyo TX807 wich pushes 130W per channel.. Sounds very, very good, even at high levels and I should know because we play our instruments (Bass and Drums) along with the stereo.. so it has to be LOUD for us to hear the music over the instrument amps..I have a 200W Traynor Tube Head with a cabinet that has 1 X 15" + 2 X 10" + tweeter. Trust me, my bass amp can play considerably louder than the stereo..but we don't over do it otherwise we can't hear the song..typicaly we run the Onkyo at around -4db when we jam and my bass amp volume is at about 3(out of 10)

At normal to higher than normal volume levels for music listening, that 130W is plenty .. I don't hear or feel that he's missing dynamic headroom.
HERESY! HERESY, I say! BUUUUURN the witch!
Because he floats.... Like tiny pebbles?
It's a fact, tiny pebbles DO float!
I might get a vp-180, don't know yet... Right now I'm thinking i will wait until i can use my vp-150 as a trade in.

I think my next major purchase for HT oriented items for me will be..

1 pair of Wilson Sasha's
1 Wilson watch center channel

Depending, i might get another amp so I can bridge the 2 channel amps so each sasha will have it's own amp.
Just wondering what Axiom will do with all of these VP150's they get back in as trade ins?

Well sure, need. I mean, if you're going to listen to your music at refreence when you're in the bathroom, with the door closed and your system is in the basement, you really need a kilowatt minimum...

Thats like saying you need to put a hemi in your VW Beetle to give you more control because the stock engine just isn't enough. You were being sold.
After much research and going back and forth I have narrowed it down to the following for my HT system:

Axiom: VP100, M22 and QS4

Ascend: CMT 340 L/C/R and HTM 200 surrounds

Tweat City: Pro 10 L/C/R Surrounds TBD

Room: 2500 - 3000^ft
AVR: Denon 790
Sub: LFM1+

Thoughts??
You do know this is the AXIOM forum, what do you think we are going to say? ;\)

I would say order up all 3 sets, do a good comparison and keep the ones you like the best. \:\)
Well, then, here's a chance to ask.

I think I want a NuForce tweaked out Oppo 83SE. Oppo's SE is $900. Another 300+ for the Nuforce-- (mostly clock improvements).

Whaddya think? And, really? Don't ya think SACD and DVD-A are both gonna get 86-ed?
that's a pretty big room! I'd go with bigger Axioms. Period. They rock. (this is an Axiom forum after all!)
Bob, I think that DVD-A has already been "86-ed", SACD(although a commercial failure)will hang around a while longer, especially in the classical realm, and the NuForce "tweak" is utter nonsense.
Surprisingly newer artists like Hiromi Uehara are releasing sacd discs.
Ok... I know there was an Audio format for DVD... the aforementioned DVD-A. I haven't been able to find a definitive answer re Blu-ray. Is there a format for Blu-ray Audio Discs?

Provided it exists, what are the odds we'll be buying lossless Audio Discs on Blu-ray 3yrs from now? Given the fact I've seen nothing on it, I would think, "not good".

snazzed
I did read an article recently where the author was surmisng that BR discs would bring back HD audio even stronger than before and it would be in the same format as BR discs since it already has the capability to handle the higher resolution unlike CD.

I'm going to go with 'B'.

......no no wait, ummm.... 'C'?

Hold on a sec.... perhaps 'A' would be my choice.

I hope that helps. \:\)

On a side note, after checking out the CMT-340 SE Mini-Towers I have to say, that is a smart looking speaker. Not that looks have anything to do with sound mind you, but I have really come to admire the look of those pointy dust caps on speakers such as these as well as others (most notably, Paradigm's). So I can't help but wonder, is there ANY audio advantage or disadvantage to incorporating those little pointy dust caps on the midrange speakers? Are they purely for asthetics and that's all?

The only reason I ask is because, while I know Axiom is not into gimmicks, I must say that in a side-by-side comparo between those CMT's and the Axioms, I can see where a lot of newbie's, who've never heard either might choose the CMT's simply because they look 'the business'. Not saying that's right, simply saying I can see it happening.

Which brings up my next question, what are dust caps even for? Traditional subwoofer speakers always had dust caps incorporated into the design. Most of todays subwoofer speakers (Axiom included) have axed them from their design. Personally, I love the look... much cleaner. So if they can remove them from subwoofer speakers, why not woofers and midrange speakers as well?

In my car I have MB Quart 'Q' series door speakers. They do not have dust caps. So obviously it's possible to remove them as well. So I ask, what the hell are they even for???

There's BD Profile 3.0. While that sounds like it has higher requirements than the Java/Internet specs of Profile 2.0, it doesn't. What a Profile 3.0 disc must be able to do is be played/navigated without the use of a video display. It is intended for Blu-ray audio discs. The spec exists, just need a major studio to use it.

That's awesome. I know there was an audio disc profiled, but I didn't realize that it had this requirement.

I have to say, that was always an issue I had with DVD-A... having to turn on a monitor to navigate a menu.
Your mom is awesome.

Huh??
EP 500. Never heard it, but I feel I need one.

Just one?
Thanks, John for the advice re: Oppo 83SE NuForce. Thanks, too, for your thoughts on DVD-A and SACD.

With a paucity of (my kind of) titles, I don't think I'm going to find enough things out there in secondary CD formats. There aren't many now in SACD.

There's another CD format (Phillips?) that's just beginning to turn up. I'll wait and see about that and cease to lust after SACD altogether. Mui Muchas Gracias!

No. "You need to feel one!" Then you'll "need" to have one. I keep mine set at one parsec below nausea.

Purple Book, aka Double Density(2000-2001?)? I know there were a few HDCDs(early 90's?) out there, maybe some of these older better versions are starting to catch on as vendors try to avoid Sony's BR and it's higher royalties(or so I have heard)
I wanna try the power amp route, the Emotiva 5 channel to be exact.

I just can't ever get that link to work! They're really pretty hilarious.
It helps if you put the link in.

When I was out there last week, I shoulda stopped by to fwack your knuckles ;\)
And here are a few choices someone thinks are better than sex:

I'm sure they're... loud?
Those speakers are horny.
With the exception of the Tannoys and the Claravox, none of these speakers do anything for me.
I really liked the speakers in the first picture. They could have panned out a little to show the whole thing though.

I've always liked the B&W Nautilus.

These must blow the roof off of the house... we all know how damn loud snails are!!!
Personally, I feel most of those speakers look like the manufacturer was much more concerned with the way they looked than the way they sounded. I understand when you're a millionaire it's important to have something nobody else has, blah, blah, blah... but I'd be very surprised if very many of those sound remarkably better than our Axioms.

Rich people don't actually listen to music anyhow, they're too busy making money... aren't they?
Personally, I love how the one touting the most advanced technology (plasma tweeters?!) is powered by a vacuum tube.

Aren't these glorified 'Orbs'???
Look like GLaDoS to me.
Micah, those round things have to be the worst design I have ever seen. Angular suspension arms on a globular speaker housing??

They look like some cheap desk lamps I have owned.
But you can act like you're a speaker designer and adjust them yourself!
My list is simple...

QS8's Black
Emotiva XPA-3

I'm happy with what I have now... so if anyone here wants to get rid of some good/mint black QS8's let me know! \:D
Now I really need couple dedicated 20amp circuits run to my media room.

A couple weeks ago I tripped a breaker when I inadvertently (didn’t know it was on the same circuit) plugged the vacuum into the same circuit as my media room and the dedicated AC for that room kicked on. After minor worries (my POS nas) everything came back up.

Yesterday while playing Mass Effect I was suddenly plunged into a black hole (now light or sound). Tripped a breaker again when the AC kicked on only this time nothing but my equipment was running. This has been working fine for a couple of months. When I went outside to reset the breaker it was very hot with the sun beating down directly on the breaker box. Must have been pulling just enough amps that it was right on the edge and the heat was enough to weaken the breaker.

Well I was planning to eventually have a line run to that room in case I ever got separate amps. Now it looks like I have another more pressing reason to do it.
