Thanks for reading, I am considering upgrading my current sub because its a man thing to do. However i am wondering if I will get any benefit. Currently i have a SVS PB 12 and keep the volume knob at about 11 o'clock and have the DB on my AVR at -5 for most tv watching and take it to zero for movies.

With that being said I am obviously not utilizing all the power i currently have but feel there could be some time when an extra ooomph would be nice. my room is 15 X 17 X 10 with 3 walls in front and it being open in the rear (its a bonus room). Possible upgrades are SVS PB12 Plus/Ultra or EP 500. This discussion isn't between which of the three but more of if I even need to because another option is M80's but that will really boil the wifes water. Thanks for any and all feedback.

I'd get M80's and a VP180 instead of upgrading the sub.

If it were me, since you already have an SVS sub I'd probably keep with the same if you want to add a second one to the mix. A pair of M80s would be nice too!

I found the upgrade of my crappy 15yr old sub to a PB12nsd made the biggest improvement in SQ, then I quickly went to a PB13 Ultra and the improvement to me was once again a step up. I then added M80s and this was yet another noticeable improvement in SQ. If I were to do it again I would get the M80s first then add the bigger/badder sub as that midrange punch/feel the M80s can add, IMO, is worth the cost and the M22's can be repurposed into another smaller system very easily.

this sounds very logical (m80 route) and trust me my M22's aren't going anywhere. Friends/family know i spent good money on a setup and almost seem disappointed that i don't have LARGE towers. Disappointed until they hear it.

I think the midrange is the area i need the most help in. I have to admit i still like the 50-80 hz that most "Sub" woofers from the box stores excel in. This was the biggest adjustment for me when getting the PB 12. would my denon be ok pushing the larger speakers?

I don't think you'd have any problem using your Denon with M80's.

Your 2310 will work, I drove my M80s with a Denon 1804 before I picked up my 3808, another M80 owner I know uses a 2105, you should be good for awhile with the 2310, at least till upgradeitis strikes again .

I made a typo when I said midrange, I meant to say upper bass. The midrange on the M22 and M80 is nearly identical.

The PB12 actually has a bit of a bass bump around 50-60hz which gives it a little more punchy feel than other subs I have heard. The box store subs generally, have a loose bloated bass that echoes on forever which can be OK for movies, but terrible for music, IMO.

I knew what you meant. I think i have some sort of conclusion, since i do have uprageitus (sp) i am going to wait until i am going M80 and a 150 so that i can put a 3.1 setup downstairs.

Your current sub is flat down to 18Hz, so I don't think there is much bang for the buck there in a change out. Going from bookshelves to floorstanding mains would make a big difference in sound, as well as going from the VP100 to VP180.

Are you talking about replacing the PB12, or adding a second? If you get a second, get a second PB12, as it's best to have matched subs. Either that or sell the PB12 and get two EP500s. Otherwise, you have two different EQ curves, and that can really wreak havok on your room response.

Generally, a second sub will help level out room response so that you don't have a ton of bass in one spot, and hardly any bass just 3 feet away. I've played test tones through my sub while walking my room, and it's amazing how in one spot you can get a huge amount of bass, and in another location in the room, you can barely hear anything.

A second sub will also give you 6db more bass, but it sounds like your first PB12 isn't running out of gas. So likely what you would end up doing is turning them both down a little. So your main benefit from the second sub would be to level out your room's bass response.

If your room's bass response isn't really concerning you right now, getting a couple M80s and a VP150 would definitely be a nice option. But it won't really do anything for the bass, unless you cross them over at something like 40 or 50Hz. Generally, 80Hz is what everybody goes with, but the M80s are bass capable speakers, and you may well have better results crossing them over lower. It's all about trying different things and seeing what sounds best to you (and your wife).
