I am considering getting the QS4 for the sides of my fairly narrow new HT room.

However, my options limit me to placing them on the walls with the tops almost touching the ceiling.

Will that really work with one of the woofers firing almost directly into the ceiling? I mean, I could give it maybe an inch, but I doubt that would be enough.

Another option might be to use a bracket, and hang them at a slight angle pointing down, this would angle the top woofer so it isn't firing directly at the ceiling, but it would still be really close.

I'm thinking no dice... But then sometimes I see pics of them mounted that way.

For what it's worth, the QS series are very forgiving speakers in terms of placement. One inch may be pushing it a bit, but remember that you will more likely perceive spacial cues by what's being emitted by the tweeters... and you DO still have a down-firing woofer there as well.

I would say that if you CAN tilt them down a bit, it would be the safest bet. But honestly, you might be OK with them just close to the ceiling as well. Many of us have had success with the QS series in less-than-ideal rooms and mounting locations.

In addition to a bracket such as this, if you're handy you could always build a slight wedge-shaped "box" to go between the wall and the speaker.

Great advice, thanks. The "full metal jacket" er. I mean "bracket" may be the way to go anyway, the place I want to put them is even partially in front of the top edge a doorway. I could mount the bracket right next to the moulding, and the speaker could hang a little in front of the moulding and point slightly down.

I also like the 5% off 5 or more items deal. For my setup, it means 2 brackets added to the order for $34! I'd be getting two M2s for the back of the room.

I really like how compact the QS4s are - it's convenient. I didn't really look before, but being only 6.5" tall, I might be able to get 2 or maybe 3 inches above them.

Any other corroborating comments?

Its already been said but I'd confirm my QS4's have been in every position available at one time or another and never did they falter or show any signs of misplacement.
They are great speakers.
Some would suggest the QS8 but in a small and or narrow room the 4's are perfect. I've even preferred them over 8's is certain situations.

I would agree with all that has been said about the QS 4/8s. I had what sounds like a similar issue to you in that on one side of my surround placement I have a large doorway which only left me about 12 inches or so of space from the top of the doorway to the ceiling to mount my QS 8's which are a little larger than the QS 4s.

The brackets Mark recommended, although not inexpensive, give you the option of moving the speakers up and down enough as well as sideways to alleviate the ceiling closeness issue.

I have a pair of QS8's in a 5.1 system mounted on the side walls. On one side of room I had to mount above a door so the top of the speaker is 6 inches from the ceiling. I made the other side matching. I am quite pleased with the sound; and as others have said, the QS's are quite forgiving of placement. Hope this helps.

hey fellas, a quick off topic question, i know the spec's, but, can the QS4's safely function at 80hz or is that pushing it too close to danger?

Mine did for a couple of years with the AVR Xovers set to 80 Hz with no detrimental effects.

Yes, going simply by the Axiom spec, a 100Hz crossover would appear to be advisable. However, the amount of room reinforcement in a particular location can result in a greater extension than the spec suggests. Measurements from one of the auto calibration systems or a separate SPL meter can help answer this question.

In any case, the term "danger" wouldn't seem to really apply; the worst result would be a slight weakness in the 80-90Hz area.
