So, I posted pictures of the Side High Atmos speakers I put up above the side surrounds in an all Axiom (for the moment there is a big HSU subwoofer and an EP600, to be replaced by a pair of EP600s). So, I watched a movie this evening, Battle Los Angeles. Holy smoke!!! 2 LFR1100 Actives, VP160 center, 8 M2 on walls, Marantz AV8805, Integra Research 7 channel amp, Marantz 2 channel amp and 2 ADA1500s (5 channels each) OPPO UDP205. It was great!!! (One of my favorite alien invasion movies)

No reason to go to the movies any more. I can make my own popcorn and don't have to worry about anyone sneezing on the back of my head. This is an Axiom home theater system and it is great.

Enjoy yours!

is Battle of Los Angeles available in ATMOS?

So far I've only tried out the bed surrounds using the highest channel mix I could find in my rack ... Lord of the Rings: return of the king ... and that was only 6.1 DTS.

There are a few Netflix & Amazon movies and TV shows in ATMOS but my understanding (and I'm not really 100% sure) is that one needs to get ATMOS on disk to get the full res presentation.

I think the Marantz processes it as ATMOS, not sure though. Nevertheless the 4K Battle Los Angeles was great. I love that movie. It shows the US military as young heroes, noble, frightened, brave.

How are you Mr. rrlev? I hope you and your family are well.

We are doing quite well. My wife keeps us quite busy on the social front (covid safe with all but a few close freinds). Between that working, kids, finishing stuff on the house, and being present family wise I usually can find an hour or two to play with the audio stuff (if I don't sleep much smile )

Well, Mr. rrlev, enjoy the music!!!!

Work, family, music, you have it all going for you! Sleep is good too. I was at my desk at 5 AM today. Normal day.

Yes because 2x600=1200>800. Also gives more placement flexibility.

But (2x500)+800 is even better. laugh

I think we are playing audio poker ... I'd raise but I don't want to spoil your fun ...

Mojo you reminded me ... I had a question about a picture he posted ...

Philip, How do you expect the LFR's to do their thing if you have them in that alcove?? (not to mention the 600 in the way of rear reflection path)

Power does add something but it's also the larger cabinet per driver which allows it to play a bit lower (the 800 is built like two 500s stacked on each other ... at least that is how I understood it from a conversation with Ian a while back). I'm not exactly sure why that is as I'd expect all the frequencies to be raised equally leaving the frequency bounds of the +/- 3db window unchanged). Perhaps it's just that those lower frequencies are moved slightly above the threshold of hearing ...

The 2nd aspect of having two speakers over one is smoothing the bass room response ... that's my main reason for going to 4 subs ...

They are about 3' out from the alcove wall. They sound pretty good! That's how the house came. Not much I can do about it.

When the homies from my childhood ethnic laborhood were faced with a thorny predicament like speakers wedged into an alcove, they torched their pad, collected the cash, and started over. Make us all proud, Philip.

I really like this place. There are enough places burning down here in the lower 48.

I have 3 big palm trees in the backyard, wrapped with lights, beautiful at night. Behind them are a stand of Torrey Pines, messy in the spring when they have an evergreen sex orgy, but beautiful year round. The room layouts permit 75" screens in 3 rooms. I have 2 and shoulda gone 75 in the other. It's also a pretty good layout for audio, alcoves notwithstanding.

No, no torching here.

The new LFR Actives and EP600s have arrived. They are so beautiful !! One LFR arrived damaged, and Ian, bless his heart, is taking care of it. The EP600s are where they belong. The LFRs are standing in the hallway, awaiting a replacement.

Very, very nice Philip. So disappointing to hear the shipper, yet again, treated Axioms the same way Jason Statham treats his victims.

Sounds like a great place!

You must rate ... they went the extra mile
A much better bang up job then I've ever got

Usually they just drop it on it's corner from 6 or 7'
or run it though with a pole or something

Going to have a movie night this weekend with twin EP600s for the first time.

Any recommendations for movies?
Posted By: Mojo Re: Tried out the 11.2 System - 09/03/20 04:15 PM
Venom.

Are the dual 600s being fed off the DSPs? What will you do for the 0.1 channel? You need another sub.
Posted By: 2x6spds Re: Tried out the 11.2 System - 09/03/20 06:08 PM
Ian recommended using stereo sub outs from Marantz 8805. I have more subs, but I don't want to run more cables to the back wall.

I'm using 4 subs in my bedroom HT system, 2xEP500s, an SVS 39-20 and a Velodyne 12". Sounds pretty good.
Posted By: Mojo Re: Tried out the 11.2 System - 09/03/20 07:39 PM
Philip, the 8805 does indeed have two subwoofer jacks. They are not "stereo" jacks. They are both routed to the .1 channel. This means when you select stereo, the left and right channels will be summed. That sum will come out of both subs. When you select a surround mode, the LFE + stereo will come out of each sub.

I very much recommend feeding each 600 from the left and right DSPs. It is your choice as to whether you want to cross the actives to the subs or, as I have, let them play wide open. I find leaving them wide open gives me flatter mid-bass in my room. Yours of course may differ. To cross the actives to the subs, use the cross-over knob on each DSP. Depending on your room acoustics, you may want to also adjust the cross-over on each sub. You may also like the boost switch on your 600s for certain movies or music.

In addition to the above, I highly recommend you add a sub for the .1 channel. This sub will also handle the range below the center and surround speaker cut-off frequencies. I would recommend a 600 because the 500 does not go as low.

I'll point out, that in my set-up, I've witnessed an "extra dimension" to bass when I follow the above formula.

Oh! OK.

I'll check with Ian as they are making up looms of cables for me.

No room for a center subwoofer. Interesting, the upstairs 4 sub system makes it sound like the bass is coming from everywhere, including the center.
Posted By: Mojo Re: Tried out the 11.2 System - 09/03/20 08:26 PM
You don't have to put the third subwoofer in the center. You can locate it anywhere.

Regarding the upstairs 4 sub system and the bass coming from everywhere, recall that in most of the old Bose line-up, stereo came from everywhere which of course meant it came from nowhere in particular.

I can tell you from experience, it is always best for bass to come out of its native channel. That of course is not always practical to achieve completely for each and every channel. But you, me, Rich, and Charles all have the equipment to achieve that for the front two channels. It's quite a revelation to me just how much bass is contained in those two channels for movies. The bass is of course always there for music.

I emailed Ian and let him know Mr. Mojo recommends using the sub outs from the DSPs. Let's see what the boss says.

Your entire air force got taken out by a bunch of garbage can-wearing lobsters. So much for the 300 gazillion $ you all spend on defense. Better to put it all on offense I say. God help them if they land here. They'd get snowed in. Then we'd choke them with our maple leafs.
