Wanted to get some input on the ideal mounting height for front channel M5 On-Walls. Does the typical "tweeters at ear level" guideline apply here? Or is Axiom's "middle of the TV screen" height guideline more applicable?
I don't have M5OW. I have M2OW in 2-channel spaced 11.5 ft apart and I sit 12.5 ft away. They are in 2.2 channel.
The centers of the tweeters are 3" below my ears. I decided on this height through extensive experimentation in my room. With this height, the images appear at the height I would expect with broad and deep soundstage. With the tweeters at ear height, the images appeared too high up. I noticed no difference in frequency response/brightness/dullness at the two different heights.
I have M22 OW for side and rear surrounds. Because I have theater seating with back row on a platform I had to experiment a little. I found the vertical dispersion was fairly forgiving. When seated in the front row I would say they are slightly above ear level. I would find something that also looks normal with the decor of the room and you will be fine.
I would take the 50/50 approach here... 50% decor and 50% ear level, mix those two together at exactly 50/50 and you'll get the perfect sound! Ear level at listening position, not when standing in front of the tv, but you probably knew that.
Kinda like the 50/50 approach Rich took right here.
