Soo.. i demoed my system to my visiting relative lastnight and guess what...

.. Hes starting to think about getting the Epic 80 7.1 system minus the sub (which will probbly be replaced with a HSU VTF-3 or STF-3)

His reciever is the Onkyo TX-NR801 if any of you are familiar with it.. i wanted to see if anyone has used it with the M80's 4 ohm load. On Onkyos website it doesnt say directly that you can use it with 4 ohms, although they have it rated in 6 and 8 ohms. as well as the dynamic power into 4 ohms and it also has "High Current low impedence drive"

Onkyo reciever

He also wants to situate the Front L&R (m80) in a built in cabinet thing, but since i told him that they need breating room he thought about maybe making some way to have them be pulled out for listening and retracted when not in use...

for you HSU worshipers.. can you still buy the VTF-3 from HSU? they only have the rosewood one on their site. or should he buy the New? STF-3

ok thats all for now. TIA

you can set it to 4-6ohms.
i'm very curious about this as well because i have the same receiver, but no axioms (yet).

**edit**
mainly curious about the m80 w/ the receiver

Hi,

As I've stated elsewhere, that "dynamic power" and "high-current low-impedance drive" is quite misleading. It may well have dynamic power and high current into 4 ohms--for about half a second, and then the protection circuitry shuts it down or imposes current-limiting that severely limits output power into 4-ohm loads so the output stage won't overheat.

That's usually what setting the switch to the 4-ohm position does: switches in the current-limiting circuit. (That is not true of the new NAD receivers, which will deliver their full output into a 4-ohm impedance.)

Tell your relative to get the M60s ( 8 ohms), which are an easy load for any receiver.

Regards,
alan,

thank you for the information
(i sent a similar question to axiom today and you guys can just omit it for me please)

thank you sir
I Have the Onkyo TX-SR800 (last years flavor) and run M80s, VP150, QS8s, M22s & PB1-ISD. This setup has been up and running for about a year now and has had no problems carrying the low impedance M80s. Actually, unless there is a Dolby Digital signal present, I run the TX-SR800 in ALL CHANNEL SURROUND all of the time which is a pretty heavy load. I too had the same fears before I purchased the M80s, but not to worry - the TX-NR801 is a neat rcvr. and sounds great with the Axioms.

Check out this review. The reviewer powers M80’s with an Onkyo 601, only 85 watts per channel, he seemed to think it did just fine. I have been using and Onkyo sr700 to power my M50’s, Qs8’s (6ohm) and VP150 (6ohm) w/out any problem. I’m sure the 801 will be fine. I can't figure out how to add those fancy links that you see all over this board so you'll just have to copy and paste this: http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avhardware/onkyo_TX-SR601_review_01.html

well great! i get awnsers. only 4 months too late

well i never heard back from him on what he actually bought but i suspect he just bought those ascends he liked... Hey Alan, you starting to sound like me with that NAD talk
as alan has mentioned, it sounds like the m80s will push the onkyo receivers in this range a little too much.
i think m60 might be a better choice for me.
