Help a novice w/hardwood floors,etc

been lurking for a few wks & decided to post in order to get help in choosing the right speaker. My room is 15X20 w/hardwood floors (has a large rug, if that matters) I was just about to buy some Axiom spkrs when I read in another forum that Axioms & wood dont mix very well (?) I thought Id come here to get some help from actual Axiom owners.
Although this is my first spkr purchase, I know I enjoy a detailed sound. The bad side is, my hearing might be sensitive if overly detailed (too bright?)
I am on a rather tight budget & considering m2's, m22's or the m40's w/ vp100's. I plan on getting a sub & since the budget issue, want to stay w/m2's.
I've also read somewhere here of using the m2's as a center?
I would appreciate any & all opinions/experiences.

if the carpet covers most of the floor you should be fine. do you have furnishing in the room? are your walls covered (drapes, decorations) or are they bare? if you answered yes to all questions you should be fine

you could use 3 m2s as L/R and center, but my recomendation is for m22 and vp 100. if budget does not allow, you can mix and match m22 and m2s, or vp 100 and m2.
how far away are you from your tv?
i recommend m22s because its a good sized room. i have never heard m2s myself(but i have read a lot of posts on these boards), but i know the m22s will fill that room nicely

I have drapes halfway down (covers only the window, bare walls, usual furniture (couch,side table, coffe table, large rung in the middle). I will be sitting about 10 ft away from the tv & speakers. Others I'm considering are Mordaunts, Wharf Diamonds & ELT's.

I think the M2's would also work well in your room.

The M2/M22's use the same components, the M22 is just in a larger cabinet and has double woofers for more bass. Since you are already planning on a sub, I doubt that bass would be an issue.

I use a set of M2's, and I think they are great speakers, and are a STEAL at the price! I'd recommend a nice set of stands for whatever you wind up getting.

you should be fine with those furnishings. some people have used speakers in ballet rooms(windows, mirrors and wood floors) and have had problems. you should be fine.

the m2s should work good too if you are buying a sub. but, that is a nice sized room and the m22s will work better.
as for the center, i found the m22 to be a good center channel. i have heard that the m2 will work just as well.

finally(hopefully i wont make you more confused) i think you would be happy with m60s without a sub. wait on getting the center channel(an m2) until you have the money. personally, i would rather have m60 plus vp100 center then m22s and vp 100 and a sub. that way, uprgraditis wont be such a problem:) you can always buy a sub at a later date, but replacing the mains is harder to justify(what to do with the old mains etc)

thats me! thanks for the 411 here & there. The only other speaker Im considering now are the Monitors (Bronze). I,too am considering a floor model but probably the m40's.

It's all really dependent on room size, and how far away you'll be sitting. From what you've said, I think the M22's would be the best option. The M2's are a bit small for that room and sitting 10' back. On the other hand, you may not enjoy all the benefits of jumping to the M60's in that room either. It's a little on the small side for them as well. They'd probably work alright, but you mention budget is an issue, and the M60's are a considerable jump up from the M22's in price. (totally worth the price if you've got the right room though!)

If you ask me, I'd go with the M22's with a VP150 center, and a Hsu STF-2 subwoofer. QS4 (or QS8) surrounds.

Please let us know what you finally end up with - even if it's not Axioms, we'd love to hear your thoughts.

the m60s are worth the 400 dollar price jump. But, the m22 might be better for your room. For me, the m60s are perfect. The basement(15x24) is used for watching TV and movies, but i turn up the m60s and i can hear them throughout the house.

m22,m40,m50?

The M22 is a bookshelf speaker. The M40 and M50 are towers. That's the biggest difference. Soundwise, the M40 and M50 have been described as more laid back/warmer sounding than the M22's.

I agree with spiff here 100%.
The M60s need room, much more than i have in our relatively small 13x16 room (open at the rear to 20').
A sitting position at 8' with a separation of 7' between the M60s is tight and does not work all that well.

The room layout is a primary influence on sound.
In addition, bigger is not always better!

If you are unsure about the sound of Axioms in your house, take a 30 day demo of the M22s. They sound identical to the M60 in the 'brightness' category. If you do not like the M22s for this quality, then you will not like the M60s either.

when I called Axiom, some guy I spoke to said Id be best off w/ M22's & VP100. Sounded like he knew what he was talking about & said he's always there. From what advice i get, the M22's are the best bet for my room size & budget. Now Ive narrowed my choices between this & Monitor Bronze B2
