How about NAD
I was reading that they are really nice on music

Actually, the 1804 replaced the 1803 and would be an excellent choice to save you some $$$. Or you could move up to the 2803 for a bit more. (I'm a Denon guy). In this price range, the Denon and the other usual suspects (Yamaha, Onkyo, Harmon Kardon) offer pretty nice alternatives.

Some touchy / feely with a bit of research would help you make up your own mind. For these bucks, it really boils down to presonal preference. With the group mentioned above, you really won't make a mistake.

The Yamaha RX-V1400 can be gotten for under $600, including shipping at a number of places on the web, on ebay, etc. You've just gotta look. My research has the price hovering around US$585

Kid, for picking a receiver there's no difference between music and movies; good sound is good sound. Nobody can really tell what's "best" for you; pick the features that you want. A feature that in my view you should give heavy weight to is the automatic room and speaker equalization which is available on the Yamaha 1400 and Pioneer 53TX in the $600 area.
