To all the online experts, please take a look at the following diagram:

and based on the layout and dimensions, give me your opinion as to which position would be best for placement of the QS8 surround speakers...location "A" or "B". Thanks in advance.

My QS4s are set toed-in (similar to example A), but equidistant from the listening position. If you're concerned about the angle of dispersion, example A works quite well for me.

mikey-

i would have to agree to the 'A' position, and heres why. the downward firing speaker on the QS8 puts out a lot of volume. i know when i go stand underneath my QS8 which is mounted at about 7 feet, it sounds really loud.. so my thinking is, if you mount the QS8's in that 'B' position, the downward firing woofer will be almost directly above your head. i would just think that would be a little distracting and would 'take away' from the sound with dialogue that is coming from your center.

and if you are worried about them not having enough volume cause thay are farther out from the listening position, then please have no worries.. the QS8's put out an amazing amount of sound for such a small speaker.

this is just my opinion.. others that have QS8 mounted directly above the listening position might be able to chime in, and debunk my theory.

Assume I am using position "A". Would the fact that the tweeters are basically pointing right into the back wall/side wall be a problem? The reason I ask is that I've read in several places that placing speakers in a corner like this is not really a good idea...
Posted By: bigjohn Re: Yet Another QS8 placement question - 06/14/04 07:49 PM
i think it would be better to say that putting them in the corner isnt the 'best' idea, but i wouldnt go so far as to say it isnt a 'good' idea. OK, that didnt sound right..

here is the deal.. you are obviously constricted as to what you can do due to the wall, and size/shape of the room.. you would be hard pressed to find anyone in this forum that actually has everyone of their speakers in its 'optimal' position. i have always said, you can only work with the cards you are dealt.. if thats the options you have, ya gotta work with it.. so , back to what you were saying.. is the surround in the corner the 'best' idea.... NO.. will it still work and sound great.... YES.. the quadpolar design of the QS8, allows them to fire sound in 4 different directions, so if you put them ANYWHERE other than underwater, they are gonna work pretty dang good..

hope that clarifies

I can chime in a bit here. My qs8's are on the side walls (in corners), facing inward, and roughly in line with my ears when seated(although elevated). If you sit under the woofer, it is distinctly noticable. I found one way to alleviate that somewhat was to angle the qs8s just slightly downward using the full metal brackets, so the woofer fires into the wall. All in all though, they are pretty forgiving. My vote would go to "A" but make sure you calibrate them once they're up, it makes a big difference! With "B" you will definately hear the bottom woofers distinctly.

I actually have mine setup as A (no real option in my studio). They sound pretty great to me. Of course I sit in the middle of the couch all the time so I am in the best possible spot!

I think either position will work. If you put them in the A position, you can compensate for the difference in distance to the listening area, and, consequently the volume, with your settings in your receiver.

Same goes for putting them in the B position. The woofers, though certainly close to it, aren't directly over you. Either way, calibrate with a ratshack SPL meter, and you should end up with a listenable situation. If at all possible, experiment with the speakers in something close to each position before permanently affixing them one place, or the other.

I think Ray3 has his QS8s on a shelf in each corner (sorta like A). Ray? Oh Ray? Get off the golf course, Ray, and in here where you belong! Sheeesh!

And marking a "par" on his scorecard.

It seems that the "A" position would be best in the diagram above.

If I can hi-jack for a moment. What if he were to be running a 7.1 set-up, with the "B" speakers equalling the rear surrounds. Where would the "A" speakers best be placed? Any ideas?

I too have a room where the listening area opens up and I cant decide between ceiling mount, stand mount or back wall mount for the QS8 located closest to the bottom (in the diagram).

Oof! I actually have mine setup as B and feel that having them setup that way just goes to show forgiving the speakers are. My brother was visiting this last week and I made him sit in the sweet spot and watch a couple of movies. He did a couple of doubletakes and said 'I'm not sure I'm comfortable with speakers fooling me into hearing things where they are not.' --- All that in a setup really not even close to optimum. Yippee!

Mike, in my view slightly better would be position "A", but mounted only on the short section of side wall and not angled, but facing directly across at each other.

That is how I have mine, and I am very happy with them.

JohnK: In that arrangement, the "back" tweeters will butt up against the back wall? Will that be a problem?
Posted By: RazorFace Re: Yet Another QS8 placement question - 06/15/04 04:46 PM
This is my dilemma, as well. I've got 17" on one wall to place a QS8 (11" wide). That leaves 6" between the back wall & the QS8.

Will this be a problem?

Mike and Mykyl, the back tweeters wouldn't actually be butting right up against the back wall, and as long as there's at least a few inches of "bounce" distance, the result should be good.
