I'm thinking of buying two 8" speaker stands and putting them on two Polk subwoofers, and then putting a pair of M22s on the stands. Does anyone one know if this would be a good idea or not? I just wonder if placing a speaker directly above a subwoofer will affect the sound in any way. Thanks.

Couple of things:

You want to make sure those subs do not vibrate.

Usually, when you find a good position for your speakers in relation to the listening position, that same position is not a good place for a sub.

My sub would have an issue with it.
My wife tries to use my Earthquake Supernova MKV 15 as a coffee table, not a good idea. All of her drinks end up on the floor. As a result I clean the carpet .

Just a thought...

The stands I'm looking at come with rubber isolation pads, which might take care of the vibrations--I hope. And I don't really understand why placing a sub close to a speaker is a bad thing. I mean, don't floorstanding speakers have woofers built into them?

Woofer and subwoofer are different things.

A woofer in a speaker is also tuned and crossed-over specifically in its design.

And, I'm not saying it is the wrong thing to do, just that it is usually not the best situation. It is not about the sub being close to the speaker, it is about the best position for the sub....which usually isn't where the speaker is.

Depending on the subwoofer, isolation pads may not do the trick. I have seem some subs that a rock solid with little or no vibration, and others that could move across the floor.

I hear you--that was a good point about the crossover; I didn't think of that. Still, I might give it a go anyway. The stands are only about sixty bucks (not exactly breaking the bank), so it might be worth a try--just for the fun of it. Thanks for the advice, though--I appreciate it.

DL, aside from any vibration question, as Curtis pointed out, the best location for a sub(generally in a corner)isn't the best location for the mains. This is one of the advantages of having a separate sub.

I remember a pic of someone's theater maybe 3 months ago. They had their mains on top of two subs. i can't remember where I saw it. It was either linked from here, the Spot or AVS. So, somebody is doing it and it apparently works OK.

You must be referring to rcvecc:

That's exactly the pics I was remembering. Thanks.
