I just ordered the Epic 60 Home Theater 5.1 Speaker Package on 11/5, much to my surprise I received an email today that my speakers are already in the hands of Fed EX, thats fast. Anyway I a have a couple of questions I need advice on.
First I was looking at receiver to power the new speakers and was looking at the
Yamaha RX-V2500 and would like to know if this would be a good receiver for the M60s. This receiver was recommended by a co-worker of mine.
Second I currently have a home theater set up but was wondering if my current speaker positioning would be good for the M60s.
Here is a layout of the room I will be using. The TV is a Mitsubishi WD-52725.
Any help would be appreciated.
Slip-on, I have the m-60s with the rxv-1500, there are many opinions on the type of sound each receiver/amp produce, and it is very subjective. I won't tell you that is the best amp, cause I have not heard them all, It's a great amp, IMO. I will say I love my 1500/m-60 combo. My 1500 drives the 8 ohm 60s with ease, and I am talking real loud if you desire. It does not even get hot, warm when it's dialed up. Like always, there are better amps, and a whole lot worse. The 2500 puts a bit more power and given that room (nice room) I can't see you wanting more. For what it's worth, I would not get caught up in the Yamaha YAPO auto set-up mike, do it manually, with a sound meter. The auto process sounds logical, but it's your room and your ear, you will get much better "personal" results tweaking it yourself, and it will take some tweaking, but worth it.
I think you'll be very happy with a Yammy, a good friend of mine only buys Yamaha, and tried to talk me into one. I ended up with the Denon, but I'm sure I would have been happy with the Yamaha also....
M60's rule....
I drive my M60s with the lesser powered, younger sibling and generation older RX-V750. It is very similar in features to the 1400, which is similar to the 2400, power being different in all three (along with some higher end tweaking features). I love the way that the Yammy soudns with the M60s. The 2500 should surely be an improvement to my receiver (and if it isn't, it must at the very least, be equal). I think you'll love it.
As far as the room goes, there don't appear to be any problems, maybe with the exception of some boominess from the front right M60 (b/c of the corner) compared to the other one. However, my room has a similar set-up (with one speaker in a corner and the other placed where the room opens up). No problems, though - at least nothing that can't be tamed with bass management.

Thanks for the advice so far the thing that worries me about the Yamaha is I keep reading that it is to "bright" with the M60s. If this is the case I hope this is just something I can easily adjust with the Eq. I would like to hear your input on this joninflorida.
I already have a Digital sound meter from Radio Shack and I picked up the Avia disk, I hope this is all I will need to balance my system (besides time).
You'll get varied responses to that one. From what I've seen, the vast majority of Yammie/Axiom owners are quite happy. There will be people who say that what you have heard is all bull, there will be people who say they have heard the effect you describe.

I have heard that said a few times, Then just the oposite. Myself, I just don't hear that at all. Also, many times a few people have said the Axiom's are "bright", then a ton of people say NO, they are not, so go figure. Like I said it's very subjective. I have been told I have an overly critical ear - perfectionist, as It just took 4 hours of convincing to my wife to "allow" me to put up some acoustic panels, (the best looking ones I could find ASC vertical beech frame panals, contoured with black cloth) that being said, I would descibe the sound as rich, and detailed, very smooth, I think the Yamaha works wonderfully with the 60s. And it will takes you weeks to discover all the functions. I would head to your local A/V place, Not the circut city type, and audition the various receivers, Harmon, NAD, Denon, Pioneer, Onkyo, and see what YOUR PERSONAL preference is. Try not to listen to the salesman, but your ears, and feelings. I think "bright" or any other overage of sound is more determined by the speaker, there are many great receivers out there, it just depends on what you want it to do, the Yamaha will sound great, so will others.
slip, i've had my system almost 2 years now, which includes 60's and a yammie rxv1300. if i had to describe the sound now vs last year, i would describe it as more laid back. i have the treble knob maxed-out on the receiver. the warmer sound is due to my sweet bride adding more room treatments. so, the yammie is not bright, but the room actually softened the highs, which i miss. goes back to the room factor.

I owned the Yamaha 1500 and the M60s and even I wouldn't say they're "bright". Though I wouldn't by any means say they're "warm". They're actually probably quite neutral. And when the Axioms are a little forward, that's what you get...a slighty forward sound. I've never found myself clenching my ears in agony, and I have hard wood floors. But there is a lot of detail.
My one gripe is that the Yammy leans more towards sounding more digital than analog. Some may like that, for others it may be a turn off. Obviously if I say "gripe" that means I like the latter
That's why I sold mine.
But again, it seems many people on the forum are very happy with theirs.
That's my 2 cents though.
I learned to ignore all the bright, warm, harsh, mechanical, etc...talk Everyone is different, and interpreting what they are referring to is left up to your imagination. I was told don't ever go with Denon (mechanical) and Axiom (bright/harsh like klipsch) cominations, most of this crap is heard over at AVSforum, by biased individuals that probably have never heard Axioms, and are just speaking from hearsay. Funny how 3 people at Axiom recommended to me the Denon/Axiom combination, as well as many on this forum.
My 2 cents is that Axioms will make Elites, Yammy's, or yes the mechanical Denons (what a joke) sound splended, with no extra amp needed....

FWIW, I also own a Yamaha receiver; in fact, I used it for a while to drive my Axiom theater before I went back and added separate amps. Yammies have always been a bit harsh on the top end, but when I paired an RXV-2095, and an RXV-740 with the M60's, it wasn't as apparent. Other than some otic fatigue after long listening sessions, the Yammies work great with the M60's. Good luck!
I have a Yamaha RX-V3300, and like my M60's.....it likes to play clean and loud.
I think the Yamaha/Axiom match up is good, and I'm very pleased with mine.
The only thing different (other than way better) from my old system(s) that I've noticed, is that It seems to need to play a little louder than a ("getting long in the tooth") guy like myself sometimes is in the mood for, to get the full effect...soundstage, bass, etc.
BUT.............for you young fella's...it will rock the house!
