I have a Pioneer elite VSX-54TX receiver, Sony 999ES DVD player, Tivo HD, macintosh cd player and Monster Power Center HTS 5100. For 7.1 I have 2 Boston Acoustic VRI560, and 2 DSI 465's, Sonus Faber center channel and Martin Logan Grotto subwoofer. All in a vaulted celing 26 X 20 room.

Okay, having said all that I need some advice on whether I should get the 60's or 80's for my front speakers. I also have no idea whether my Pioneer receiver will push the 4 ohm 80's. Could someone please tell me if the will because my manual doesn't seem to be clear on this. Thanks guys for all your help.

My GUESS is yes. The Elite line is more robust, but it's not seperates. There are many people here though who run their M80s out of receivers where the manufacturer states nothing of 4 ohm loads. Though, especially pushing 7 channels, you run the risk of running your amp hot. So make sure it's plenty ventilated.

I believe we recently had a thread regarding this very same topic (different receiver). The general concencus for that was that you can play M80s, but M60s are easier on your amps. If you can swing it, moneywise, my suggestion is always to use an external amp for the M80s. Your Pioneer Elite VSX-54TX has preouts. And if you REALLY want to make these puppies sing, buy 2 2-channel amps and biamp your fronts and quickly become the envy of your friends

I think you should go for it.

The Pioneer receivers are rated for 6 ohms nominal impedance. Most speakers rated 6 ohms nominal will dip to below 4 ohms at times. The lowest that the M80s go, in terms of impedence, is around 4 ohms. Because of that, they are even nicer on your amplification equipment than typical 6-ohm speakers.

In addition, I don't think that the Pioneer would be out of place driving 4 ohm loads. The reasoning behind this is that it is part of the THX requirements to be able to drive 4-ohm loads safely.

Thanks so much for your help guys. I think I have made my decision to go for the m80's And if for some crazy reason it doesn't sound great then I will go the amp route. And yes, I read also that the THX rating is required to drive 4 ohms but I wasn't sure if that was with the Elite line. Thanks again!!

Good luck with them!

I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy my M60s driven by the VSX-1014Tx-k, a rebadged Elite 52Tx minus the RS-232 port, 12 V trigger input, and shiny front bezel with "ElitE" logo.

I personally chose the M60s because the room I am using for my audio equipment is simply too small to even use the M60s to their fullest potential. Otherwise, I would have definitely gone with the 80s. Anyhow, keep us informed as to how you like them when you get them.
