God I think I have a sub disese, this is a long story, but has does anyone use this set-up, with the Crown K-1 amp and Rane Eq. http://www.svsubwoofers.com/subs_ss.htm
What is it that makes you want to upgrade? Loudness or sound quality?

With speakers, it would be in search of better sound quality.
Curtis: I can certainly understand your question, It is ALWAYS sound as my main driver, but sometimes there are other factors. AS in DECOR TOO. I have an opportunity to purchase the SS "package" with the Crown K-1 amp, the Rane pe-17 EQ. and (2) maple SS subs, brand new-un-opened boxes for 2200.00 (US) I have (2) 20-39 PC+'s that are about 2 months old!! with the conventional black felt/velour. There is the WAF factor, the SS have the upgraded TV-12 drivers, better specs, better looks, EQ. and a crown amp that alone sells for 1100.00 bucks, I don't know why these deals always seem to come up AFTER I made my "most recent" big purchase. That being said, If you saw my home, the maple subs would lOOOOOOOK so much sweeter, so I guess there are other factors than sound, but if there is an an improvement, ask my wife, I will rationalize it!! Just asking for opinions that don't have my exuberence.
Looks are a big issue. Why that is dismissed so readily I'm not sure. I say go for it.

Boy, that's all I needed (LOL) Thanks. It is just such a major difference in looks (I always want to try to spell asthetchics?????) And a considerable/substanial upgrade in performance, If I can get both - without goin broke!!

I would not pay the 5K that SVS offers this package for, but at the price, I think there is much merit. But I feel like an idiot changing my mind all the time, cause it sounds so damm good now, but better, is better.
Jon:

FWIW: If you really want to upgrade, why not join go for an infinite baffle sub? Appears to be the best performance you can get and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I ordered my 4 15" drivers from Stryke last week for $400. Another few hundred for an amp and $120 for a BFD, and by all accounts I will have a sub that will blow any box out of the water. I just discovered the concept a few weeks ago myself.

Sorry I am not up to speed on inserting links, but Google "Cult of IB" for the Cult of the Infinitely Baffled. Even SVS's website (I was planning on getting an SVS) discusses the bigger the box the bigger the sound. You can't go bigger than infinite baffle. I realize that they are not for everyone, but I think everyone should be aware of them.

Do any Axiom owners have IB's? I saw an old thread in the subject, but it doesn't appear many people have them.

Pete
all i got to say is, when you guys decide to get rid of those horrible SVS subs, be sure and give ole' bigjohn a shout.. i will be more than happy to take them off your hands, CHEAP!!!

bigjohn
I don't have one - I altered course before I pulled the trigger. I am sure the SVS sound good, especially when setup well. I just find the IB concept to be the best of both worlds - great performance at a great price. Like I said, it isn't for everyone.
I can totally understand the asthetics........if you can afford it.....then do it, those maple tubes do look VERY nice. As for sound quality...I think that Rane will do wonders!

I love maple as well....which is why I will probably upgrade to maple Hsu VTF-3HO if/when I can afford it.
Curtis whether you can afford it or not is not the issue. You MUST get one.

I have all the paperwork and boxes on my 2 20-39PC plus's, They hold their value (does anyone know SVS's free listen period?) pretty well. If I sell the 2 20-39s I won't be in that much deeper. It's knida like something that big, and honestly that obtrusive, if you have it in beautiful wood, custom woodwork, it becomes the oppoiste. At least that's my rationalization. If nothing else-it's a conversation piece, yhat's for sure. They stand 50" tall, so they are quite a bit larger than the 20-39s and even bigger then the 16-46s!! There is a substanial performance gain, They have a much more rigid, solid cylinder, that many feel tightens up, what is already very tight base with the ultra driver. NOT just looks. Below is a review/calibration if anyones interested, it's a bit lenghty.

Jeesh, Jon.

You haven't ordered that yet?

OK, let's all help him out here. Please chant together:

JO - ON................JO - ON................JO - ON

JO - ON................JO - ON................JO - ON

You in the back- I caaaaan't heeeere youuu!
I am picking up the 2 monsters today!!! I wonder how close that maple will be with the axiom beech, a bit lighter I would persume, but hopefulyy close. My wife thinks I have a sicness (I probably do) as I will have 4 SVS subs, so the other 2 MUST GO! Ihate selling great stuff, but no chioce here.
Throw those "old" SVS's on audiogon.

In reply to:

That "tightened" sound is what I experienced between my Hsu over the 20-39PC+ and PB12+ in my home.

You should be able to get good money for your 20-39PC+'s on audiogon or HTF.

Your new subs will be quite enjoyable!! What's the next upgrade??
"Your new subs will be quite enjoyable!! What's the next upgrade??"

Being sigle again = A DIVORCE!!!!!!!!!
Well....some do consider that an upgrade.
Where will it end?!?!

Jon, I seem to remember thinking that the in-home audition period at SVS is 45 days, but I did not check.

That's going to be a beautiful setup. Are you still on-track for a new house over the next year or so? Good to get all this HT gear locked down before you start spending on upgraded light fixtures and the like.

Congrats. You have a sacred duty to report back.
Yes, Tom, good memory. I can't wait, people laugh at me cause I am picking out flooring, and sketch HT drawing, and it's way to premature, but it's fun. If it's 45 days and not 30, I have to check my paperwork, I may fall into that category. That was another reason, the new room WILL require 2 major subs for the cubic footage at the bass levels I like. So now I build the room around the subs decor LOL, I will have them up and running tonight. I hope they match close to the Axiom beech color. By the way, I am keeping that pantry as you suggested for my QS-8 mounting, and to seal off the room a bit. Thanks for that suggestion. I have never used a separate sub, The Crown amp said a Harmon company, are they are/affliated with Harmon Kardon??
Harman is a huge company; they own H/K, Infiniti, JBL, Revel, Mark Levinson, etc. I don't see Crown listed on their website, but it would not surprise me.

<edit>

whoop, just found it. Yeah, they own Crown.
That is going to be a spectacular setup, Jon. I am excited for not only your (ongoing) HT upgrades, but also your home building adventure. Keep us posted!

I REALLY like the look of those subs, and think they will make a very elegant statement in your home. Surprisingly, I perceive the wood cylinders much differently than the big black ones - transcending to art/design rather than pure utility. Funny how just the covering rather than the form wins me over.

I think most of the Harman products are pretty respectable, and I'm sure that SVS would not advocate use of the Crown if it wasn't fully satisfactory.

Thanks for sharing your journey.
Well guys, I can't even believe it, UPS pulled in the wrong drive way, I went over there and got her, she opens the back door and drops the first sub (purposly) 3 ft from the truck to the concrete. They say all over them fragile and do not drop, when fedx deliverd my 20-39 plus SVS you could tell it was going to be fine before I opened it. All the packing materials were in tact-un-opened but the whole box was all smashed up. I move the box, and the thing is floppin around like a ping pong ball in a mason jar. Both drivers are trashed, one is hanging down resting on the bottom base plate, the bottom base plate is cracked in two. I an so friken pissed. These are beautiful, and they are trashed, these drivers are literly worthless. If I could email someones the pics, and if someone could post them you would not believe it!! I don't know how to convert my email with the pics here. the only good thing is They are insured for 5K UPS is supposed to come by to "investigate" sorry if this is conveluted post, I am too pissed and disappointed to see straight.

Wow that really sucks bigtime.Sorry to hear that.
Sounds like it's time to file a complaint. With both SVS and UPS. Sounds like SVS should have packed it a hell of a lot better, and like that driver needs to be more careful (or less pissy). Sorry to hear about that, man. Good luck.
They were packed well, it appears, I know that sound stupid, but these boxes look like they dropped from a 10 story building, Even with good panking if you throw them around on concrete there is going to be problems
If you're 100% sure that she dropped it on purpose, absolutely file a complaint against the driver, Jon.

I've heard quite a few first-hand stories from others in my profession that have lost expensive equipment due to careless handling and yet end up fighting to get the insurance compensation that they paid for.

I assume that in this case, SVS paid for and handled the shipping and therefore would be compensated, but a pro-active stance from your point of view wouldn't hurt.

Besides, what if it had been irreplaceable heirlooms? She shouldn't be on the job with an attitude such as she displayed, and these days it can be damn difficult to fire someone (no matter how incompetent) without lots of documentation.

Mark that was my bad, like I said I was pissed and kinda typing away, I don't think she did it with INTENT, she just didn't care, the door opened and she was just casualy droping it, not like it was something that sliped, or she accidently lost the grip, just bang, here you go, sign here. I should not have said on "purpose" just the box says fragile, handle with care, this end up. There was NO paying attention to any of that. And that was what I saw, god only knows what that big ol box did that I did not see. I literly watched it drop from 3 feet, hitting concrete, it weighs 79 pounds, despite packing on SVS end, something gonna give. And it did alright.
i am weeping a true tear for you jon.. i am sorry for your horrible experience.. hopefully, SVS and Fedex can make it right, and FAST!!

bigjohn
That totally blows Jon.
Keep us posted on what happens.
well they look good

But they don't sound good. It may be hard to tell, but that is the driver laying in a heap on the bottom base plate. The magnet and all are busted up laying like a sack of potatoes, the kevlar cone is an inverted sack, just holding all the busted driver pieces. UPS coming to inspect today.

My God. That completely sucks. Hopefully that driver (both UPS and SVS) will be replaced quickly.
