Would be in one chassis.

Imagine the Denon 3910 and 3805 "unioned" into one machine, removing duplicates such as dd/dts decoders and silliness such as D-link or 6 analog cables just to enjoy surround music. The hdmi output goes straight into my Panny plasma. Oh yeah, and one less remote.

If it's doable in a HTIB, why not in higher end domains?

If this imaginary combo sells for $1,500, I'd seriously consider taking out a home equity loan.

Or is it all just a wacky thought?

I don't disagree on some points, but I'm not sure it would fly.

The negatives:
People who are interested in getting something as nice as a 3805 and a 3910 don't generally mind poring over equipment stats to decide on the right equipment, and are comfortable with interconnects. It would weigh a lot; more than my glass-shelved Bell'O is rated for. Some people, despite the cost savings, might want more or less receiver, or more or less disc player. Or, they think Denon makes the best players, but would only mate them with an Onkyo, Anthem, H/K or outlaw amps...i.e., they wouldn't buy those two components as their first choice. Finally, if something went wrong with one section or board, they might likely face having to replace the whole thing.

The positives:
Easy setup, would look cool, theoretically, the in-chassis transfer from disc to amp cuts down on some circuitry, and finally, the savings on two chassis, two power supplies, and duplicated D/A converters would save money.

The issue for the manufacturer is: Is the product such a likely success that they will get a return on the marketing, engineering, advertising and distribution of a product... and they're likely to go with what they really believe will be a winning product. Separates are proven, a combo unit as you described would be very cool to some, but maybe not enough to make the product a virtually-guaranteed success.

Personally, I'd like it and would have bought it considering they are the two components that I wanted anyway! I'm just not sure there's enough of us!

You mean like this?

Rotel RSDX-02
m.s.r.p. $1500

Only thing it's missing is SACD.

Thanks for the link/revelation, spiff. Looks like just the answer to my prayer, almost (missing SACD/HDMI). Throw in a wireless module to retrieve and play my MP3 collection, and I'll be in heaven. Wait, can it walk my dog too?

Nice to know I am not the only one with this burning wish.

The Rotel marketing pitch is not really music to my ears though. I don't care about space savings. The real advantages of making such combo are:

- savings in chassis, decoders, power supply, power cord, remote control, etc.
- ease of calibration and bass management
- getting rid of the remote's multi-channel toggle problem
- getting rid of superfluousness such as D-link
- putting Monster Cables Co. out of business. This is my favorite one. There will be only two cables: a subwoofer cable to my PB10, and an HDMI cable to my TV. Have you ever felt the urge to puke seeing $100 THX-certified, ultimate-performance, diamond-encrusted, assembled-by-virgins audio-interconnects at your local Best Buy?

Now that's Occam's razor to me. I agree with everything Mark said about acceptance barriers, but if more people knew about that famous razor ...

So, check this out. I have a friend at DenonUSA and was telling him about your idea. Seems someone thought about it first! Sorry about the large size photo! The as-yet-unannounced 8805:

Is this what you were asking for?
Posted By: haanhvu Re: My dream dvd player/receiver combo - 01/21/05 08:22 PM
YESSSS!

I stared at the 8805's pic longer than I ever stared at Angelina Jolie's pics. Seems like the player is based on the 5910? In that case it's gonna cost more than my car ('99 CRV).

Thanks much for this gem of insider info.

This is April the first, isn't it?

For me to buy it would have to be a 5 disc changer and be upgradeable.

Get to work Mark.
