I am looking at the m60s with vp150 center and four qs4s for a home theater 16x20 with 8ft ceilings. Question is two ep175s? or should I go with one EP350 I will be running an Integra Amp

I am a huge fan of dual subs. Mostly for position forgiveness, and blending rreasons. That being said I don't think the 175s is what you want. Your 60s are going to have a very good little punch to them. If you are gonna spend the knid of money 2 175s will with a little punch, look at Axiom, and other subs that (now am I talking about one) go lower, play louder, and really give you that impact that you purchase a sub for, to pick up where your mains fall short. In other words, paying twice for 2 (little) subs or paying once for what you are realy trying to achive. You can find a bunch of smaller "modest" subs in peoples storage areas - there is a reason for that.

P.S. I edited this, because I was not unaware of exact pricing, 2 175s at 530.00 each, take a look at what Axiom and others (ep 500 would match) get you as far as performance. The room is not big, nor is it small. Not saying the 175s are bad, just ment for a smaller room. 2 halfs don't make one whole in subs. Now if you want 2 wholes, well that's cool (LOL)

Ok--- so lets update this a bit, two 350s or one EP500? Sounds like the digital technology might be the better. The budget won't handle dual 500s

Keep in mind I don't know the ep500, so I am by no means an expert. But look at the specs, and in this case they are being provided by the same manufaceur, which is good. The 500 goes much, much lower, and is more powerful than 2 350s, and for that matter less expensive, If two lower priced subs only play down to a certain HZ. then 2 or 10 of those same subs won't drop below that. (ie you will never hear that sound) The feeling in the 18-30 HZ (and even below 18 but there are limits I know $$$) area is awesome.

Depending on the movie/music with some material there will not be much difference above these low frequencies. From everything I understand, the 500 is a great sub. Amen to that. When I bought my speakers I hadn't clued in that "deep bass" and "lots of bass" didn't necessarily go together like they used to (ie that a large woofer got you deep, loud bass).



If you're getting M60s then IMO it's more important to get a sub that can go deep if you want to get your moneys worth. The EP175 is really aimed more at providing a solid foundation for the bookshelf speakers, not for crawling down into the deep bass *below* what the M60s can do.

No problem pasting the comment, but let me just toss in a caveat. I deleted my post because I felt I shouldn't be making a statement like the one in the last sentence without having some hands-on EP175 experience. I was basing my comment on specs and reviews and felt the wording was a bit too strong to be based on that kind of info.

I stand by the advice, just felt that my comment about the EP175 could be taken as being more critical (and more emphatic) than I intended.

One minor question -- you said your room was 16x20 with 8 foot ceilings. How close is the ceiling height to being 1/2 the width, and what is the ceiling made of ? I'm asking because if you have an exact 2:1 ratio there (to something solid, not perforated ceiling tiles) there's a chance you might have a nasty 70Hz peak in the room and *might* be able to do something about that with dual subs.

Having said that, I have no idea if you actually CAN do any thing about a room mode with dual subs -- it seems like you should be able to do something by placing them 1/2 wavelength apart at the "nasty frequency" but I have never even *read* anything like that ;(

The ceiling is actually 8'6" and has an octagnal soffit down to 7'4". The ceiling and walls are drywall, with two layers of sound board behind them. There are also two stadium style risers for seating and a stage in the front of the room.
