Hi all,

I'm new to the board and I have a question about QS8 placement. I'm putting a theater in my basement. The room measures (WxHxD) 14'x17'x8.5'. Viewing couch will be at ~12.5-13ft ft from a 106" DLP front projector.

I'm thinking of putting the following in:

VP150
M60's
EP500
4 QS8 for side surround and back

My question is, how far do the back surrounds need to be from the couch to get maximum efect? Back surounds will be about 6ft up on the back wall. Side surrounds about 4.5ft off the ground.

I'm afraid I might be putting the back surrounds too close to the viewing spot.

Thanks!

Chris

The QS speakers seem to be more tolerant of being "close to the listener" than direct surrounds. I have seen pictures of a few systems where the QSs are within 3 feet of the couch with apparently good results.

From the dimensions you gave it looks like the couch will be right up against the back wall. That might be too close... could you at least pull it out a foot or two ?

Strongly suggest you give Axiom a call -- they will probably have seen a lot of configurations like yours.

Chris, welcome. There should be some distance open behind the listener and the back surround speakers to give the back surround effect a chance to develop. If I followed your description, you'll have about 4', which should be adequate. The 6' height should be fine and the separation should be wide enough so that anyone on the couch has a back speaker on each side of them(for directional effect), e.g. if the couch is 6' wide, the speakers might be separated about 8'.

Hmm. I guessed he had the speakers on the long wall, you guessed he had the speakers on the short wall. My guess is that you were right

ack... i typed in the dimensions wrong. doh! The room is 17' long, 14' wide. The couch will sit at ~12.5 feet, so there should be about 4+ feet. This was the distance I was referring to.

Thanks again,

Chris
