I have Qs4 surround speakers in my 15' x 12' room along with m3ti fronts and a vp100 center. I have a Harman kardon 220 reciever. I am wondering whether I should set the surrounds to "large" or "small" on the reciever. In the manual it says if your speaker can handle frequencies under 100hz then set them as large. But the Qs4 only goes down to around 70 I believe. So is the large setting or the small setting better?

When you are not using a subwoofer (you didn't mention one), then use the "Large" setting for all the speakers. If and when you add a subwoofer, then use the "Small" setting, as the decoder in your receiver will route all frequencies below 100 Hz to the subwoofer. This removes the burden of having to reproduce deep bass from the small woofers in the M3Ti, the VP100, and the QS4s. If you want, you can try the "Small" setting for the QS4s and see what differences you hear.

Large or Small, If choose small,I can choose 1 of 4 settings ,60Hz,90Hz,120Hz,and 150Hz.for front,center,and rear speakers.Also what crossover frequency should I have my sub. I want to hear some bass come out of the speakers,not just the sub. I use my system 80%HT and 20% music.But I want to hear the big explosions and bangs through the sub,with some bass through the rest of the speakers.
Paul, I assume that you've connected the sub output on your receiver to the low level input on your sub. Set all speakers to "small" and set the receiver crossover to 90 hz. Then turn the crossover on the sub all the way up so as to get it out of the way of the 90 hz crossover on the receiver.
Personally, I like the sound of my speakers at Large, with the sub. I have a setting in my amp, however, so it does not send the same signal to the LFE channel and other channels that are set to Large. If, however, I set it to play back the LFE signal to both the sub and channels set to Large, it sounds terrible.

I agree with John K's advice except I would begin by trying out the 60-Hz setting on your receiver with the settings at "Small" for the mains, center, and surrounds. That should let you hear "some bass" from your M22s, VP150, and QS4s as well as relieving those speakers from deep bass duties. Set the sub's crossover control to its highest setting, and if you can't achieve a satisfactory blend, gradually lower the sub's crossover setting.

I have a similar question, I guess, except I have M60s in the front, and I am getting some QS8s for the surrounds. Would you also recommend using the "small" setting with a 60 Hz crossover? I would like to utilize the excellent bass of the M60s but have the sub kick in for the lowest octave or so. I could do this using the 40Hz crossover on my (brand new, not set up yet) pre/pro, but then wouldn't I be missing some bass info from the surround and center channels? (I have the VP150)
If I set the fronts to "large", all bass will go to the M60s and none will be routed through the sub at all except for the LFE. But since my sub has good 20Hz output, I would like to utilize this to capture the lowest bass of the front channels too.
Any suggestions?

I have the HK510 my L/C/R are set to small and XOver at 199hz
the the rears I would set to large Xover at 100hz.
Chris, my suggestion would be similar to that given to Paul. Assuming that the sub out on your receiver or pre/pro is connected to the line level input on your sub, you should set all speakers to "small" and set the sub crossover all the way up or bypass it entirely if the sub has that option. The crossover on the pre/pro should be set so as to give the sub that you've paid good money for enough to do. 40 hz isn't enough. An 80 hz setting(if available)would be more appropriate to allow your sub to work where it does best( i.e. 20-80 hz). This would remove any bass problem from the center and surrounds and should provide even better performance in that range than the M60s(don't worry that you wouldn't be using them fully).
