What's the best method for really tweaking the output level of HT speakers? I've set mine "by ear" only. When I run the test tones, my center sounds brighter than the mains. How do I adjust that? All the speakers seem to be at about the same/appropriate level but I know I could do more. Do I need an SPL meter or a setup CD or both or none?? I have M60s, VP100, QS4s and an HSU STF-2 sub with a Yamaha receiver (I think it has a setup EQ for the center).

Though I'm sure others feel differently, I consider an SPL meter and a setup disc, absolute essentials. Many think "Shoot! Why should I invest the money if I'm only going to use it once." If you move your speakers, even a little, or change or replace certain pieces of equipment, you should recalibrate. I just added a Denon DVD2910, and needed the meter to calibrate the 5.1 analog outputs. Plus, the discs help you calibrate your TV or projector for optimum usage. I just removed a BFD from the chain to my subwoofer, and I've got to recalibrate today. Both items come in real handy.

Seems like I've seen some setup disk recommendations on here before. Any suggestions? I guess the Radio Shack SPL meter is OK..

The Radio Shack meter is just fine. Either the analog or the more expensive digital will do the job.

Your choices for the disc are:

AVIA Guide to Home Theater

DVE (Digital Video Essentials)

Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune-Up (This is reputed to be a simplified version of the AVia dis.)

Any of the 3 will do the job for you.

On my Denon 2805 I use the Auto Setup with microphone to adjust my levels, delay, and check for polarity issues. I do not use the Room EQ settings as I find it makes my 60's sound to midrangey

Does your Yammy have YPAQ like some of the other Yammy's? You may find you don't need an SPL meter.

Get the disc. Get the meter. Analog is fine. In fact Dr. Hsu recommends the analog over the digital. (Just be aware that you need to compensate with the analog at the lower frequencies but that chart is available on line).

You will have fun calibrating. There are so many variables involved that it is like a puzzle of some kind. Plus, you get a disc that puts out bass that is ridiculous. I feel terrible for my neighbors every time I put out the meter and role on the disc with my VTF3. It can really put a shakedown on you. If your sub can play below 20hz, the sound waves can even be a little uncomfortable feeling. Its really cool!

Just get em. Its a cheap investment. And you will certainly use it more than once. Experimentation leads to better sound. . . hopefully!
