Have you done the "sub crawl" yet ? If not :

- get a long enough cable to reach from your receiver to where you normally sit

- put the sub in your normal listening position, either on the floor or in your chair (floor is probably safest)

- play some music, get down on your hands and knees and crawl around the room until you find a spot where the bass is smooth and even (or at least where it sounds best)

- put the sub there

- sit in your chair and enjoy

This is not an April Fools joke, it really works.

Yep, it is called the "Sub Hokie Pokie", just don't forget to spin yourself around, "That's what it's all about"

Actually, I'll be moving everything down to my new HT in my basement very soon. My wife is very concerned about noise traveling upstairs. Not sure there is a lot you can do, but I did put insulation in the rafters above the drywall..

good luck

Bass traps on the ceiling..
Pink champagne on ice.... and she said
"We are all just prisoners..."

I have no idea if bass traps on the ceiling would help to reduce what goes through to the upstairs, but there is a certain sense to it. A bass trap is just a sealed box with a tuned sheet of wood on the front and absorbent gunk inside, shouldn't be too hard to cover the ceiling with something like that...

Hmmmm.

Insulation in the rafters might help, but sub sounds have alot of power, carry quite far.
Possibly moving the sub away from basement 'loose' walls might help somewhat. Maybe there is a rattle in the 2x4s.

The sub scrawl is officially documented in the HSU sub manuals as well!

what you have to do is float the room with special cross members that go on your studs then your sheetrock screws to that also a second layer of sheet rock going in the other oposite direction.what you try to acomplish is to eliminate and hard surface from makeing solid contact with any other surface. ther is a lot more to it than that but that is the jist. its a lot of work and i decided to just throw some insulation on the interior walls and call it a day.

Try and have a friend over when you're doing the sub crawl so you have someone to talk to and can get a second opinion on the bass. Your family is likely to laugh at you unless they are also into audio
