As in Gorgeous twin black M80's!

Ordered them from factory outlet Thursday evening, had them Dinner time today ( tuesday) Now, if you don't live in NFLD, you can't appreciate just how fast that is because everything you get shipped here takes longer

Anyways, they came while I was home dinner time. Needless to say I was over an hour late getting back to work...ooops!

the boxes were beat up pretty bad. I only had about an hour to get them out of the boxes by myself....damn heavey.. And try a few songs but so far I am very impressed. Looks like they have the sound I'm looking for.

Now, my home theater isn't done yet, and I dont' have the reciever that these things are going on so I put them in a "temp" room with my old setup. Just swapped out my Cerwin Vega D-9's with these. I could not believe the amount of bass that these "little" 6.5" woofers had. Amazing. Granted, my Carver amp tends to make bass sound better on any speaker I've tried it with, but still I was very impressed

More testing to do later on, and I have to really look over the speakers, position them a bit better and so on but it looks like I'm going to be ordered the rest of the speakers as I am very happy so far!

Congrats fellow M80 owner, I was also very impressed with the amount of bass produced by these awesome speakers. What do you have in mind as far as powering these babies up?

got a carver amp here now. This is all going down in the home theater I'm building downstairs. Nothing super fancy. 110" screen with Infocus projector. Of course now that I know I really like the Axiom sound, I'll get the vp150, and qs8's for surrounds. My HSU VTF-3 mkii , already ordered, and should be here by Monday After hearing the m80's though, I'm not sure I needed to get such a big sub. I would like to "feel" the bass a little more, so that sub should do that.

Thinking of going with a Denon 3805. Although I have not heard it yet. I like the sound of my carvers now, so I hope it doesn't change to much. I do like a bright, clear sound with good bass.

I'm still "breaking in" the speakers...if there is such a thing. I've tried everything I can throw at them so far. Rap-Rock-techno-country-top 40, I am really happy so far. Besides, the speakers are just gorgeous in Sexy Black. Really wanted the light wood finish but thought it would be a nightmare to get everything to match.

I had intended to keep my vega's up stairs for music purposes. Now, after hearing the 80's, I am thinking of getting a set of 60's for upstairs. How much difference is the bass between the 60's and 80's?. Wondering if I need a sub with the 60's.


anyways, I need to get back to playing with my new babies! I love em!

Nefl, once you are accustomed to the 80s and their bass I'd say you'll more than likely want a sub with the 60s. But that's only my opinion and you'll have to take a listen for yourself.

Congrats on the 80s, they are great speakers in my opinion.

A few folks here like using photobucket to host their photos. I think they use img tags.

I've never heard the M80's but let me tell you the M60's also have some great bass in em. Both the M60 and M80 speakers have dual 6.5inch woofers, but the M80 has an extra 5.25 woofer and extra tweeter.

Of course since you are into bass, can never go wrong with a sub. But don't underestimate the amount of air the M60's can move.

I can move a fair bit of air, myself ... after a big Mexican dinner.

I think I got the woman sold on getting the 60's. My Vega's are large. 19" wide, 19" deep, 36" tall, and 90lbs. She loves the Axiom's look, but even more she likes how their only 9" wide. It makes her living room look larger

It'll be a while, but it looks like I'll sell the CV's, and get the 60's. Hope Axiom's free shipping is permanent because without it I'll be screwed. I also have a future bar that will need some smaller bookshelves around it, so i have some more money to save up apparantly.

Before I get the 60's though, i need to get my center and surrounds. I think I'm only going 5.1 for now. Maybe 6.1. how much material out there takes advantage of 6.1/7.1? And with 6.1, am I better off getting a Qs8 for the center, or getting a real center channel?

Now, back to the 80's.

The shipping boxes were damaged pretty good. Looked like someone was poking holes in them for handles. I'm surprised something that size doesn't have some sort of hole in it for handles actually because they were very awkward to lift. One side had a large hole in the outside box, and it also went through the inside box. This had me scared to death. I opened everything up, and sure enough even the plastic in that area was torn, but I can't see any damage.

Another corner on the boxes was also worn through. There is a little mark on the corner of one 80, but it's the size of a pen mark so I'm not crying.

Considering these were factory outlet speakers, I'm astonished. I could not go to the local hifi store and get speakers in this good condition. fantastic.

I sat down from 5pm to 11pm listening to everything I had. Even yanked out the old 80's music, def lepard, ac/dc, metallica, some old pop stuff the woman likes. It all sounded great.

Granted, feed the 80's a crappy source, and you'll get crap out. But any speaker that has this much detail and clarity, or bright as some say, will do just that because they won't hide anything. As funny as this sounds, that is exactly what I was looking for.

the bass is still blowing me away. Granted, it doesn't hit as low as my CV's, at least I don't think so because sometimes is sure seems like they do. I find myself actually turning back the bass more with these then I ever have. it can get boomy as you crank the bass but nothing compared to some speakers I've heard.

My only complaint, and it has nothing to do with sound, is about the grills. they are thin and flimsy (spelling?). I almost feel like I am going to crack them when putting them on. granted, they look fine when on. But why cover these gorgeous things up anyways. Even the woman had to admit she was impressed with the dual woofs, mids, and tweeters.

But, all good things must come to an end. I had to turn it all off fow now. People like to sleep around here sometimes. I think I pissed my neighbors off enough for one night anyways.

Many people around here helped me make this decision to go with the 80's. I say thank you to all, and the Axiom staff. Fantastic family here.

just like to say hi. hope your happy with your axiom speakers. i run the m60s with three qs8 and the vp150 with a vtf3 mk2 hsu sub. the sub blends in perfect with axiom speakers. Also if your after heavy tight bass its great very nice sound no boomy bass. its sound is very clean. it gives you two options either you can keep one port pluged for lower harder hitting bass or go with both open to get clean bass at very high levels. i keep one port plug for the simple reason it would shake my house apart if its to loud. hope you like it.

If you're talking about the center rear then I think a QS is recommended over a regular speaker. There is apparently an odd effect where a sound directly behind you can be perceived as being in front instead, ruining the 6.1 effect, but having a diffuse speaker at the back helps.

Hopefully someone with real 6.1 experience can step in here. most people seem to be going 7.1 rather than 6.1 even if the content is all 6.1 at best because of the effect mentioned above... having two rears eliminates the problem. In the case of 2 rears, they would normally be direct speakers like M2, M22 or (in a couple of cases) M80s.

i've been running a 6.1 system with no problems. i use a qs8 as the back surround. i really feel that the problem of the sound feeling as though its coming from the front has to do with the room your setting your system up in. being to much in the middle of your room probally could cause this. i would go with 6.1 if it works for you which it should. i find 7.1. to be kinda useless at this moment.

Well, the twins (m80's) have a new friend today. HSU VTF-3 MKII.

It matches in quite nicely. Although it might be just a little overkill for my needs. This thing is huge, hits very low and hard. I have the volume on "1", and it's almsot too much. I do love it, but I think the woman might be a little less excited about it

Has she tried sitting on it?

Hsu volume knobs are notoriously sensitive. I don't think, regardless of room size, you'd ever be turning it up very much.

Have you whipped out the handy dandy Rat Shack meter and calibrated the sub volume? If you go by ear, you'll likely have it turned up much louder than needed.

No rat shack meter yet. But, not to toot my own horn or anything, but I have been around audio all my life, I can usually do it by ear pretty well. I have found the sweet spot already.

.....I'll get her to sit on it later on, see if she likes it then...the sub that is.

Keep in mind that room we are doing up is in a mess. So the Axioms are in another room with our old tv. all the new projector/screen stuff is in storage until the mess...ahem, I mean "home theater" room is done. I'm not doing anything fancy with it, but it's just little old me doing it so it'll take some time. I'm redoing the entire basement, not just that room to.

Wow looks great already. Me likee. That low angle shot of the m80 gives a nice towering perspective. Can't wait to see more.

I just spent all weekend tearing down the walls, gyprock, carpet out of my basment. next comes wiring, projector/screen placement, plastering, sub floor......and so on and so on...

Very nice pics - one comment - aren't the HSU subs designed to fire down on carpet? I think it says so in the manual, not sure though.

I just thought I'd mention it, I wouldn't know why it would have a negative effect on the bass it produces. Just repeating what I read somewhere...

I'm curious about the Carver amp you're using. What model? Is this a pro (as opposed to an audiophile) amp? I've been reading recently about people using pro amps to get prodigious high-current power on the cheap by using Crowns, Qsc's & Carvers. I've been mapping out my long-range upgrade plans and may go the pro-amp route if my choice of upgrade receiver can't handle the 4-ohm load of the 80s (yes, they are my choice for upgraded mains).

Yeah, the HSU sub is meant to shoot down on carpet. Like I said, this is a temp room. The final room will indeed have carpet.

That particilar amp is a smaller Carver, TFM-15(power amp, or pro amp as some call it). It handles the m80's just fine. Underneath it, is a Carver CT-17 (pre-amp). mostly older stuff now. Once I get my new Receiver this stuff will be used strictly for music on my older cerwin vega d9's.

Newf ... For now, a small area rug under the Hsu will suffice ...

yeah i know. I got the sub friday, been home sick most of the weekend, and spent the rest of the weekend working on the basement. So, i just haven't had time yet.

To be honest, even on hardwood, the hsu sub sounds awesome.

A little piece of carpet under the HSU would be a good idea. I've read posts on the HSU forum of the subs bouncing around and scratching hardwood floors pretty badly.

my biggest complaint about the HSU sub is about the brass carpet spikes on the bottom. They are very sharp, and the fact that the thing weighs 82lbs and it'll poke 4 holes in your hardwood instantly. And for some reason, people like to lean or sit on subs and think it's funnny....arg.

I had it on one of the womans rugs, but it even poked a hole threw that and still lightly marked the floor. At least axiom packages rubber feet with their speakers.

Anyways, I got 4 penny's underneath the thing now, and it's working out fine. That'll do until I get a chance to get up to wally mart to get a decent rug for it. I'm actually hoping I can start moving this stuff into the new room anyways soon.

the STF-3 is a pure monster. very ginormous, and extremely powerful. i just can imagine the WALL OF SOUND that newf is getting right now!!

Bigjohn, Last year, We had a VTF-3 Mark II in the Theater room when the SVS B4+ arrived. There is NOTHING to prepare one for the sheer size of that monster. My wife was about ready to KILL me ... The VTF-3 auddenly looked like a multi-media subwoofer by comparison. The SVS lasted four months.

I can't say the woman is all that excited about the vtf-3.

Funny thing. In that room, I originally had the Cerwin Vega d9's. They stand ~36" tall, 18" deep and wide, and weigh 93lbs each.

I got the m80's on Tuesday. the woman loved them because they were 9" wide, and the "room looked bigger". She was all gung ho for the m80's because of that, and they sounded and looked great of course.

......then the VTf-3 arrived on friday and totally burst her bubble $1000.00 for a big black box that dwarfed her end tables. Oops.

So, if the SVS is bigger, I'd be single if I got that one. The EP600 would probably be a little too much for her as well

yea, i had never actually seen the STF-3 til i went to bray's a few months ago. i was really surprised with its overall mass and just its presence in the room. i mean, there was NO doubt that was a bass producing beast, and you were just gonna have to deal with it.

i have seen the pics of the SVS B4, but not in person. and i can see what you mean, it looks massive also. there is no way in heck my wife would let me bring that in the house. i think she would just start pointing and screaming!!

Heh heh ... Mine DID kick and scream. I even had shown her the measurements, she eyeballed what she thought it would look like, and STILL said ok ... It was a FUNNY day when it arrived.
