I am useing a 6 channel motherboard for my home theater system wich is hooked to my kenwood 6.1 channel reciver,can i expect to recive 6.1 discrete dts sound from this board or would i need to upgrade to the next 8 channel board to be able to input 6.1 channels to my reciver?

That all depends on the signal coming off of the board...how are you connecting it to your Kenwood?

I currently have a ASUS P5WD2 Premium which does 8.1 via coax or optical outputs.

I am useing the optical connection on the asus a7v880 was not sure if i would only get 6 channels this way or 6.1

The board will output 6.1 via optical to your receiver.
Just make sure you have 6 Speakers and One Sub connected to your receiver....you should be good.
