I'm going to ask a few questions about separates so bear with me here. I know zero or very little, other than what I've read. I'm looking at the Outlaw website and I'm concluding that I would buy for example, the 7125 amplifier to go with the 990 preamp/processor. I'm assuming:: aaarrrggghhh!!! 1. That's all I need?? 2. These 2 pieces replace my current Denon 2105? 3. Is there a way to buy one piece-the amp-and continue to use my Denon? 4. If so, Is there an advantage or disadvantage?? Those of you who have the separates, had at one time receivers, so you understand the dilema and confusion and hesitancy!!! Thanks.

I'm not familiar with your particular Denon, but most modern receivers offer 6ch (or more) pre-outs for precisely the purpose you mentioned. Use the Denon as your pre, add an amp, buy the 990 later. And yes -- if you choose to go the Outlaw route, those two components are all that's necessary.

Charles, yes a processor such as the 990 plus an amplifier such as the 7125 would serve the same purpose as the processor and amplifier in your 2105. Your 2105 has a full set of 7 outputs from its processor section which could be connected with cables to a separate amplifier, continuing to use the processor section of the 2105. The advantage would be more maximum power capacity, but unless your listening room is huge and very high sound levels are used, your 2105 already has more than enough power. Buying more power, which would be unused, wouldn't be cost-effective.

I agree with John, I have the 2805 which I believe has 10 more watts/channel than the 2105 driving 7.1 and it is fine for my 800 + sq. ft. room.

Hi cgolf:

As has been said, your Denon will work as a preamp as long as it has pre outs. As great as some receivers are, every receiver I've added a separate power amp to has been a significant improvement over a receivers amps regardless of room size. Definitely give it a shot using the Denon as a preamp, and be sure to let us know what you think.

Charles, I'm currently using a Rotel 2 channel amp to drive the 4 ohm 80s (fronts) via the pre-outs on an H/K 635 with the 635 driving the center and surrounds. I'll also chime in and say that *IMO* it is quite an improvement over the reciever standing alone. It is doing the job fine untill I go seperates for everything.

I use my 3805 as a pre for fronts and center. If you are satisfied (for the moment) with the features of you 2105, use it as a pre. Add the amp now and look for a new pre in the future. I went with Outlaw Monos acrosss the front.

Thanks again everyone. I think I will use the Denon as a processor for now and add an amp-not sure whether I'll go 2,5,or 7 channels yet. Probably 7. My problem is that I'm interested in the separates but don't have the funds right now to spend $2000-$2500. Adding just an amp will keep me within budget and let me try this out. I'll let ya know how it works after I purchase the amp..

I am using a NAD 352 Integrated Amp for 2-Channel listening and a Pioneer VSX2012 for 5.1. My NAD is rated at 80WPC, but it blows the 100WPC Pioneer out of the water.
