I was wondering if you guys could offer some suggestions to beef up my humble concert/music dvd collection. So far I have the following:

I've been meaning to check out the following DVDs:

Guitar Crossroads Festival
Roy Orbison
Eric Clapton - Live In Hyde Park
Live Aid (4-disc)
Bee-Gees - One Night Only (DTS)

There are many others but I would like everyone's suggestions on some keepers to buy. I'm really, really waiting for Pink Floyd's Pulse DVD but delays might force its release to next year.

I'm open to pretty much any genre so please drop any and all great concert/music dvds. A bunch of my dvds were purchased from the tips of other memebers. Any input is appreciated

PS-I HIGHLY recommend you check out the Michael Jackson DVD if you haven't seen it! This title can be found at most places for under $12!

I can recommend a very high quality concert dvd from Iron Maiden called "Rock in Rio". Excellent video, and 5.1 audio. Simply awesome dvd. Check it out!!!

Pink Floyd's Pulse should be a good one. I'm waiting too. How about Rush In Rio, and Eric Clapton - One More Car One More Rider.

Concert For George was great, too.

Concert for George is indeed great.

The John Mayer DVD is really great - he's much better live than he is on his albums. If you did those, you're in for a treat. This guy can really shred on the guitar, too...

Also, I thought the Dave Matthews Band Live in Central Park (filmed in high def) looks and sounds great. Lots of oldies but goodies, a couple of newer songs and several guest appearances.

Metallica - Cunning Stunts. My favorite rendition of One. Great basswork.

Hash, looking at your list, there appears to be a big genre gap. You really should add something like this Swan Lake .

Concur. Coming from one that loves everything from Mozart to Metallica...give it a try. The classics hold their allure for a reason.

I have two DVDs to add to your list. Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live at the El Mocambo and Queen - Live at Wembley Stadium. Also, if you are in the mood for something softer, the Norah Jones - Live in New Orleans is one of my favorites.

Yes John, totally forgot about Swan Lake, I recall you and some other members talking about it in some older threads.

I notice there are several versions of Swan Lake, is this the one you prefer? I can't seem to find when the this version was filmed (I see it was released earlier this year). A colleague just told me I couldn't go wrong with the Bolshoi or the Kirov version.

Also, anyone here have The Nutcracker, and if so which version?

Right, hash, in the past I've on several occasions recommended CDs of the gorgeous music for Swan Lake, which I enjoy as much as the ballet itself. Incidentally, for anyone who may be interested, Tower has a 25% off sale going on for many great CDs, including a fine Swan Lake.

Your colleague is a wise man when he suggests going with Bolshoi or Kirov for the Russian ballets. Yes, I specifically suggest the linked Bolshoi performance which is from a live 1989 performance(with much enthusiastic applause). More technical details are shown here . Applying DPLII to the stereo sound nicely spreads some ambience to the surrounds.

Now for the Nutcracker it's the Kirov's turn in a performance at the Mariinsky Theater.

I agree, Rush in Rio was good, although I had to use Stereo(direct) mode to tame down the crowd noise, at times it was hard to hear Getty. Also, I hated how the cameras seemed to switch about every 5 seconds, on my 10ft screen you had to sit back a ways or you'd get dizzy

I also agree with David above, Queen at Wembley Stadium was freaking awesome.

2) "The Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense" - One of the all time great concert films

Also, the "Led Zeppelin DVD" is a great one. Worth it just for "Moby Dick." John Henry Bonham RIP.

Geez, I almost forgot "Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii" and "The Who Live: The Isle of Wight" like I don't watch them once every couple of weeks or so.

And for the love of all that is RAWK you must get "The Kids are Alright."

Same here, I always listen to this DVD on Stereo (direct). Can't wait for the new release this fall...

I saw David Grey Years ago as an opening act. I really liked his stuff, but I have never followed up with him. I'll have to check that one out. I think he opened for Maria Mckee or Sarah McLachlan when he was on his way up

The first time I saw him was in the early 90s (maybe '93 or '94?) opening for Shawn Colvin in Birmingham. Perhaps that's the tour you're thinking of?

I would recommend any of the following music DVDs.....

I'll second Stevie Ray Vaughan's - 'Live at the El Mocambo', but I'll also add the 'Voodoo Child' on the 'Live at Montreux' (1985, second disc) is a real treat...actually the whole 'Live at Montreux' set is very good, imo. Mater of fact all of SRV's Dvds are great. Stevie Ray is the man!

E.C.'s - Crossroads Guitar Festival is very good also, you have to be into that kind of music...I am.

Los Lonely Boys - Texican Style, Live from Austin is a real keeper....although some might disagree, Henry Garza (to me) has a little SRV in him. Just a little. All three of the brothers really have a lot raw talent.

Has anyone seen/heard the Cream reunion CD or DVD?

I'm sitting here getting caught up on my e-mail in my office when XM40 (Deep Tracks) just followed a great version of Jimi's Voodoo Chile (SR) with "Toad" from the Cream reunion concert at Royal Albert Hall. I really thought that I was gonna blow out the Cambridge Soundworks system on my editing system. The Cream recording (and Ginger Baker's solo)sounded fantastic on the portable "Roady" XM unit and this secondary system.... but I really need one of the Polk XM units installed in my main system (and some M3s for my office). This would have been incredible on the Axioms!

It's one of those mornings when loud, clean, Funky, powerful, heavy music makes all the difference! God, I love XM for exposing me to all this different stuff!

Anyone check out the DVD or CD to verify the recording quality?

I have heard the 2 CD set but I have not heard/seen the DVD yet. My co-worker says the CD is very compressed. I could not hear a problem although I listened at work and not through my Axioms. My co-worker also said that the DVD was outstanding both audio and video. I heard on another music site a poster thought the CD and DVD were exactly the same. That said my impressions were that the muscic Gained something and lost something from the original 70's versions of these songs. It lacked some of the fire and raw energy and abandon of the originals. What it gained is, some restraint (a good thing in some ways) and the experience and maturity on their respective instruments that only years of playing will bring. For example Ginger Baker may not be playing with the raw abandon of their earlier releases but at the same time he is never overplaying and what is played is very tasteful and seems just right. Clapton is simply amazing and plays some of the best licks I have heard him play in a long time. Jack Bruce is not in the best voice at all times but it's amazing with his health issues he sounds quite good most of the time. His bass playing is as always outstanding. Much clearer than on some of those old recordings which sometimes sounded like his bass was inside of a quilt or playing through a 18" speaker with a big tear in the surround. Any way the 5.1 makes excellent use of the sub woofer. I liked it very much. But I always felt that the experience with the Cream was about the energy and the pure abandon.

Thay have also released The Complete Farewell Tour on DVD from the 1977. I just might have to have both.

I also concur with your choice of the Bee Gees and the Erc Clapton/Hyde Park - both terrific.

I don't know where you live but here's a suggestion. If you are in a city with a robust library system, check and see what they have from this list. You should be able to find a good number of them. Let's you audition before you buy.

while i have about a dozen concert dvd's, my favorite is still the Monterey Pops Festival. as a collection, it is awesome, but one disc in the set, has the one hour set of jimi(remastered in DTS), and a 45 minute set from otis redding(also DTS). these are truly spectacular live sets, and BY FAR, the best of my collection.

here's a few that I don't think anyone mentioned

king crimson - neal and jack and me (2 concerts on one disc: three of a perfect pair live in tokyo 1984 and the noise live in frejas 1982. live in frejas was shot on film and to me is worth the purchase alone)

sting - bring on the night (a great, great documentary. not just live concert music)

joe jackson - live in tokyo (this is the 1986 big world tour, truly a fantastic concert. extreme musicianship and sound quality)

page and plant - no quarter unledded (unledded? hardly...to me, it's a total kick in the rear end. kashmir with the egyptian ensemble and the london metropolitan orchestra is too cool. a lot of atypical zep live stuff including since i've been loving you and three other songs from zep III)

yes - keys to ascension (there is a lot of yes live around, but i think this is the best next to symphonic live. this will probably have to be an ebay purchase. i also have abwh live that i got from a guy on ebay that is a rare find)

search ebay and google for your favorite artists and you'll find stuff you didn't know existed

I think Roger Waters Live in Berlin is great.

I only have a few concert DVD's, but my favorite is Heart "Alive in Seattle".

I might have to look for that one.I'm a huge Heart fan.

I would recommend "David Gilmour In Concert'. It's a little short but very good.(make sure to play the extras)
Anothere nice one is Coldplay "Live 2003".

I've always wanted to see that one if for no other reason than to hear Gilmour cover Richard Thompson's "Dimming of the Day". I have a tough time imagining what that would sound like.

I havent heard Richard Thompson's version but I really like Bonnie Raitts version.
David Gilmour does a fine job with it as well.
