I have been researching which speaker system to buy for my new basement home theater for awhile and narrowed the decision to Axiom, Paradigm Studio and PSB Stratus. I need to have front bookshelf speakers due to the wife factor. My room is about 2,500 cu ft. While I was looking for my receiver, one of the high-end audio places pushed the M&K 750THX speaker system really hard. Does anyone have any view of it versus the 3 that I had narrowed it to. From a cost perspective Axiom was in the lead before, but M&K is also interesting from a cost perspective. Cost isn't the driving decision factor though. Views on the Axiom vs Paradigm vs PSB are also valuable. Any advice is appreciated.

What is your budget? The M22's would be fantastic when mated with a sub. There are many around here that have demoed Paradigm against Axiom, I think Axiom usually gets the upper hand. Can't offer help on PSB or M&K....

My budget for the home theater speakers is $4K.

i also forgot to mention that if i go with bookshelf speakers, i may need front port of enclosed speakers to get the placement angle right.

None of Axiom's bookshelf speakers are front ported or sealed. Why is that an issue?

btw...a co-worker of mine has that M&K system, and when he heard mine he kicked himself pretty hard for spending the extra cash.

There's a post by Abyss in this section titled "Just a few words and Photo" and it seems he's listened to the same systems as yourself...

Hello atvmichael,

PSB builds several very good floorstanding speakers in the Stratus series (in particular, the Silver) but the last Stratus bookshelf I auditioned and reviewed for the Canadian magazine Sound&Vision (the Bronze?) was disappointing and overpriced relative to the M22ti's.

The Paradigm Studio 20, which I also own, is extremely close in tonal balance to the M22ti's. It has a little bit of a bass hump that at times might be annoying but overall I'd call them "similarly good".

M&K has built good sat/sub systems for years. I don't think they are quite as neutral as the M22ti's and in the past were much more expensive. Axiom's QS8 quadpolar surround, for example, competes directly with an M&K tri-pole model that sells for $1200 a pair.

Regards,

My bookshelves are next to the wall, 2 feet wide but set back 6.5 inches from the middle bookcase section that will house the TV. I have been told that to get the right positioning on the speakers for the listening area I will need to have them over to the side close to the wall which may make back ported speakers not sound as good as they should. I was leaning to the Axiom before I heard this. Is this true?

Nonsense. There are few absolutes relative to speaker positioning; the number of variables within your room render such a blanket assertion laughable. Not only do the room dimensions matter, but the interactions with the furnishings and the type of floor and wall coverings can also be meaningful.

Axiom speakers require little more than a few inches of breathing room for the rear ports to serve their purpose. How close to the side walls you put the speakers should be a function of trial and error for your ears, with your equipment in your room. Generally, putting speakers too close to the side walls can cause nasty early reflections that compromise the sonic image.

But the notion that speakers should be close to the side walls seems nutty to me, as does the idea that rear-ported speakers would suffer more from such an arrangement than other types. Perhaps I don't fully understand your room.

Are you putting the speakers IN/ON a shelf or on stands? If the former, you may have a point about the ports, but will likely get pretty dismal performance regardless of the design or cost of whatever speakers you choose.

Who's providing this "advice"?

Anyway, I'd call Axiom, describe your room in some detail to them, and converse with them about options. They are fine folks.
