Well... I've been fighting this POS Denon DVD player for 2 years and I'm done. [censored] up piece of Chinese bullshit.

Maybe I'll put the [censored] thing on ebay and then blame FedEx for the incompetence of the slave laborers who put the [censored] thing together.

Finally have a night where we could watch a movie, rented Episode 3 (haven't seen it) and the POS won't work. Does it all the time - overpriced, overhyped piece of crap.

Whatever happened to "Made in the U.S.A."?

Have something against pasta?

My $30 Cyberhome DVD player from Walmart works [censored] .

Sorry to hear about the Denon -- there are few things more frustrating than an unreliable product. My Pioneer Elite is still happily chugging along several years later. I never thought I'd be a Pioneer fan, but it's never given me a moment's trouble. It might be an option worth considering.

My refurbed Denon 2910 is chugging along just perfect. Just listened to some MARVELOUS SACDs and DVD-As.

Thanks for all the encouraging words, fellas.

Got it working again. Same old routine - unplug from wall sit and wait, try again, again, again.. BS.

I'm buying the Sony megachanger ASAP.

Good move, Mark. Apparently from all the censoring this issue is a bit irritating!
Posted By: ereed Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/19/05 12:00 PM
Still have my Denon 1600 from 3 years ago and still running perfect. I think you might have a bad unit and you should still think about buying another denon dvd player in future.
Posted By: jinhan Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/19/05 01:47 PM
I feel for you man... Have you had problems with Denon before? I've had my Denon DVD-2200 for 2 years, and I have had no problems thus far. Maybe you got a lemon?

Hopefully your next DVD player will be a nicer experience.

I recently bought a used Denon DVD-2900 and was disappointed when I first powered it on and saw that the entire picture was green! I checked the component cable about three times just to make sure it was plugged in correctly, which it was. To get it working, all I did was switch out the cable! Funny...the cheap DVD players all worked fine with the old cable.

Geez, Mark, how do you really feel? I wish you'd try to open up a little more.

Reading between the lines, I sense some dissatisfaction with your current installation.

I have a first-generation Pioneer and a cheapo Toshiba. Never had a bit of trouble with either one. It's a pity that virtually all of these devices are made in China and disposable. Can you even get something like this that is made in USA (or Japan, for that matter)?

I have crappy TV's, so I can't really tell the PQ difference. That's probably how it will always be. It takes a pretty obvious qualitative difference to get me to spend extra; no regrets about the Axioms, but when the processing is entirely digital, I see/hear less difference.

If it truly is shot, I recommend tying a rope to it and pulling it behind the car for a few hundred miles!
Posted By: bigwill2 Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/19/05 05:39 PM
I will attempt more subtlety in the future, Tom. I will not be buying another Denon DVD player in my lifetime (especially since prices on basic players plummetted). My Denon receiver has been great, but it was made in Japan not China.

On the bright side, it finally started working again and I was able to watch the movie. Not bad. Perhaps a little overdone in comparison to the originals? The new ones seem a bit more formulaic, driven more by effects and action than timely plot/character development. Or I may just be getting grumpy and old.

I remember standing eagerly in line when I was 15, Heineken in hand (and every coat pocket) to see The Empire Strikes Back. Those were the good old days....

Occasionally, we will put in a movie for the 2 yr old while we, uh..., have dinner or something.

He occasionally displays some impatience typical of children that age. In such cases, it seems the [censored] DVD player will NEVER work! Kid crying, wife complaining/second-guessing, $400 POS DVD player non-functional. I don't know how I've resisted slamming it against the wall.

Don't blame the chinese, blame the assholes that call a quality product something they want made for 6 USD.

Incompetent slave labourers, something about that I find unbelievably irritating.

Your kid still cries?

j/k. mine too.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/19/05 05:52 PM
Ummm, aren't these products manufactured mostly by robots?
Posted By: F107plus5 Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/19/05 06:12 PM
.....hard to get even a robot to work for those wages....

"Don't blame the chinese, blame the assholes that call a quality product something they want made for 6 USD.

Well at $1-2 per day per worker, I have difficulty comprehending how these products can sell for hundreds of dollars (or in the case of Rockets, thousands of dollars!).

Why isn't there international furor, or any national media coverage, of the recent crack-downs on rioters in China? Are atrocities only newsworthy if they are connected to the US and/or President Bush? Oh, that's right, I forgot... their value system is simply different from ours - who are we to judge, eh?

Oil money enriching the psycho-retards in the middle east, China practicing economic warfare on the US and open warfare on its own people, and an immigrant third-world underclass in my country are little pet peeves of mine, I reckon.

I certainly did not mean to offend or inflame anyone. LOL

"I'm buying the Sony megachanger ASAP."

Good luck with that. I bought one a couple months ago, and spent many about thre hours loading 400 discs in the carousel. I let it catalogue the discs overnight. The next day I watched bits and pieces of a few movies, and then decided to see how quickly it would switch from disc 1 to disc 400. The darned thing started bouncing back and forth from something like disc 23 to 397 and wouldn't stop. I unpluged it and tried again; same thing. It took me about 7 hours of timing the carousel bounces and unplugging the unit to retrieve all my discs. Even after the thing was empty, it continued the bouncy game. Oh, and the HDMI output would only work at 480p resolutions...nothing higher.

For what it's worth, this was manufactured in China as well.

It's also extremely deep - another reason I haven't bought one yet.
My Sony 300 disc CD changer has been solid - with tons of features and a ridiculously low price tag.
Maybe I'll opt for just a cheap single disc prog scan player instead.
Posted By: KC23 Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/19/05 11:45 PM
Was just checking out that 400 sony changer today. Sorry to hear it suxs.
Posted By: F107plus5 Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/20/05 02:14 AM
We purchased a 400 disc Sony 'bout a year ago and are having no problems with it(other than it "forgets" the titles it plays from 1-99, only) Besides that; it's Great!! Has a good picture and even better sound.

They may have made some changes since we bought ours.

Oh, and by the way.....ours was made in Malaysia!!!
Posted By: bigwill2 Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/20/05 02:19 AM
It would be awesome to have, IMO. All your DVDs, including the bonus discs, available instantly. More space for an overflowing CD collection. Decent price relative to similar products.
I would have bought it already, but for the size issue. It would have to go on top of my current AV rack.
And if it is, in fact, made in China...

OTOH, if you have the space, go for it.
Too bad Costco doesn't sell them. I had a Sony DVD camcorder for 8 mos before the lens cover motor gave out. Took it back to Costco w/out a receipt and got a full refund. Just bought the same unit last week at a $50 discount. Gotta love Costco.
Posted By: bigwill2 Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/20/05 02:31 AM
I think my 300 disc player was made in Malaysia, too.

Ironically, I wrote a 25 page paper as an undergrad on Malaysia for a politics of the pacific rim class.

Had to have retained something from that, wouldn't you think?
Posted By: F107plus5 Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/20/05 02:59 AM
While I certainly can't comment on your understanding of Malaysian politics, I sure can't disagree with much of anything else you've written about on this thread.

Mostly I'd nodded agreement with the majority of your points!

....to the point of hollerin' "Right On" at one instance!!

I purchased a Pioneer Elite DV-79AVi and absolutely love it. Outstanding player, outstanding build, outstanding performance, I have zero complaints. I'm also running a Sony ES DVP-NS3100ES along side with it, another excellent player. It helps with my laziness so I don't have to get up and swap out movies as often.

Posted By: Babalu Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/20/05 03:35 AM
What you said is fine and I guess you were going for comedy, I have been a bit sensitive about the issue lately. Just a trite complaint about a faulty dvd player in the same breath as the people suffering in China got to me. Like who gives an f about some dvd player in that context.
Posted By: bigwill2 Re: No more Denon for me! - 12/20/05 06:06 AM
Too true. My sympathies certainly lie with the slave laborers - regardless of their skill (or lack thereof). That much cannot be said for the elites of their country, however.

Modern China is an abomination to mankind.
