I saw a blurb about Sony's new HD (blue ray?) DVD format, AND Toshiba's HD-DVD format.
Anyone have the technical info, and what this means to the DVD market?
It sounds like to me, that one will need ANOTHER "new" dvd player (from one, or the other company) to play the new HD-DVD's (from one, or the other).
I wonder if this is going to be like the BETA-VHS deal in the early 80's?
Let's see now,.......first we needed a DVD player, then...a DVD player with progressive scan....now a HD-DVD, and a bunch of "new" HD-DVDs, and a......and a................
I'm staying away from both till the war is settled. It is very similar to the whole VHS-BETA deal, but the issues that I think are of major concern are, will they be compatible with our current setups.
This topic get talked to death about everywhere you look. I can't wait for some standard hi-def media, but right now I really don't care which "wins" in the end. They both have their share of pros and cons, and I have no plans of owning a Playstation 3 (which has the built in Blu-Ray), so I don't care. I just want my double-trilogy set of Star Wars (EP1-EP6) in hi-def. Right now I just have it on VHS sitting on a shelf because that is one set of movies that needs to be in hi-def.
If you want other people's thoughts on the subject, just do a quick search here and you will find a few threads about it.
Here are some I already searched and linked for you:

"Fool me once...shame on you, fool me twice...shame on me".
Yup! And we, the consumer, suffer for it!
Samsung is working on units that will take both. Units that can play both might be the early answer ... in the long run, who knows?
Don't hold your breath. A universal player seems quite
unlikely at this point.
Nice...perfect example of cutting of one's nose to spite their face.
Idiots. Especially so when you consider the pile of cash on the line.
Playstation 3 is supposed to have blueray, I wanted to get it for me and the kids, but will it last?
I'd say IF HD-DVD "wins" playstation will still have blue-ray. And with Sony's track record with PS1 and PS2 I don't see why PS3 would be any different.
It is sad that this is happening (again) but just sit back and wait for the dust to settle.
