hi

wanted to know what fellow axiom members think about dts or dd on dvd. I am planning to purchase couple of dvds like jurassic park, etc..either on dd or dts, and was wondering whether there is any noticable difference between the two. people have said that dts is better, but i have never really compared the two, and don't know if it is worth paying double for dts.

thanks

you dont have to pay double for dts, dvds come with both. you just have to go to options or setup and pick the one you want.
Posted By: HomeDad Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/02/06 11:48 PM
Alot of DVD's will have both, I prefer DTS I think it has a much more dramatic sound.
Posted By: tomtuttle Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/03/06 12:01 AM
Sometimes, you have to change the options on the DVD player AND the playback options on the DVD content.
Posted By: sonicfox Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/03/06 12:09 AM
In general, I prefer DTS because it's more dynamic. But in some cases, I've preferred the DD mix. But if I had to pay double for DTS (although you shouldn't), I would definitely stick to DD.

sonicfox,

There is something different about your post.

Ah!

Nice avatar.

I look for DTS versions on dvds. I do like the boosted emphasis in my action movies.
Posted By: nickbuol Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/03/06 12:17 AM
I've been seeking out DTS version of DVDs since 1996 or so. I love it. Movies remixed in DTS go through the whole mixing process over, but with higher bandwidth (supposidly) and more pronounced effects. I LIKE IT!

You should not have to pay more for DTS, as others have mentioned, but not every DVD comes with it. Fortunately BluRay and HD-DVD will require BOTH DD and DTS in their standards (if they ever settle on them). Either format will sound great on your Axioms, and the Axioms can definately handle the extra umph that is on the DTS track.

Yeah...at first I tried to hide that I was a girl here because I was afraid no one would take me seriously (well...maybe they still don't!). But you nice boys who know have made me feel comfortable, so I thought..."what the hell...I think I'll put up my photo now!" (at least for a little while, that is )

Imho your picture does your posting name justice
Posted By: blackorp Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/03/06 12:44 AM
I lot of the new dvds have dts, but for example, the jurassic park 1 with only dd is older and newer versions with dts are double the cost of what i can get. But, i guess i'll go with the dts one given what you guys have said.

Wow, we have a girl on the forum, am i dreaming??? lol (She is even brave enough to post her picture). I think the guys should start posting their pictures too.

you guys shall all refer to me as Brad from now on.

Homedad: okay, i'll check out ebay.

That's a mighty pretty smile, Ma'am. I can't speak for others, but as far as I'm concerned, your presence brightens this place, and you're a most welcome member.

I see that sonicfox is from Davenport, IA... I grew up near Dubuque (a little more than an hour north of Davenport for those that don't know)... Now I live in the Des Moines area. So does Sirquack. I am just east of Des Moines (not East Des Moines) and he is a little south.

I was just in the Quad Cities 2 weeks ago, and I spent a few weeks there in early January working on a support contract that my company has with Iowa Health.

Anyway, good to have a female on board, AND another Iowan!

PS. To those that are wondering, my avatar IS me....

Jimmie, most DVD's don't come with both.

Ohhhh to be single again. Sonic, when you say older, is 38 old?

I'm 36, so no...38 is not old!

Blackorp,

If you go to deepdiscountdvd.com, they are having a 3 for 2 sale on some of their $10 and under DVDs. I believe the DTS versions of Jurassic Park 1 & 2 are available under that deal.

Any chance you know any of the Ault's from Bettendorf, they are my cousins...Amie would be about your age, and Curt is a year older than I? Never know, it is a small world..

Posted By: sonicfox Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/03/06 03:47 PM
Nope. Most of the people I know in the Quad City area (other than relatives) are people with bad driving records which require high risk insurance...only because I sell it to them! So you can imagine the type of people that I have deal with on a day to day basis!

Hmmm....I suddenly have the urge to take out a new life insurance policy!!

Older men, huh! Unlike infants, when you change their diapers they actually say "Thank you"!! (Sorry Jack.....just tryin' to tip the scale back in favor of us younger guys!)

Posted By: jimmienorton Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/03/06 05:51 PM
I meant that if it is DTS it also has DD,I know there are alot of DD and less DTS.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/03/06 06:01 PM
Sorry, your right, I misunderstood...
Posted By: WhatFurrer Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/03/06 07:33 PM
There are numerous copies of movies distributed in varying incarnations...When I bought my copies of the Jurassic Park movies, I intentionally looked for the versions which had DTS as there were instances of both...some with and some without DTS, but the prices were the same...unless you are buying a "Special Edition" or somesuch which comes with an extra disk with all the featurettes on how it was made and a lot of sometimes worthless addtional information...If you do some additional research, you should be able to find most any movie (if it was offered in DTS) at a price comparable to most others...Double in price sounds like a rip-off...

Definitely don't settle for the prices at Worst Buy or Short Circuit City or other Mass Marketer...you can do better.

I get most of my DVDs at Amazon.com , since I discovered that most of the time I can get a used (and totally usable) copy for right around $10. Quite often it is less, so with shipping I rarely spend more than $13 or $14 MAX. I surf there way too often, ending up buying a movie nearly every week....... Out of more than 70 DVDs I've only had a couple of problems: full screen versions when wide screen was ordered; only one non-shipment. I still think it's a good way to go. Just stick with the vendors who have lots of feedback numbers and a high percentage of positive comments.
BTW, I find I like the greater dynamics of the DTS sound on my movies. I think there is more "detail" in the sound. Listening to DD after a DTS movie almost sounds a bit muffeled. Almost.
Posted By: Richie Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/04/06 01:28 AM
Very interesting thread! :-) I too buy a lot of DVDs from DeepDiscountDVD.com and Amazon.com. I try to get the DTS version whenever possible. But DTS DVDs are becoming more and more scarce everyday.
Posted By: biggsly5000 Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/04/06 01:40 AM
The only time my amp ever went into protect mode was using DTS. It is definitely louder at the same volume setting. I dont think it necessarily sounds better though.
Posted By: blackorp Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/04/06 07:28 AM
Hey guys, thanks for the input.
I still find these online store like amazon a little more than what i can find on ebay. however, it takes awhile when you have to wait for item to end. Still, you would save 3-4 dollars on dvds. My most recent purchase last weeks was "stars wars silver box set","fifth element special edition", "snow falling on cedars","cinderella man", etc.

Does anyone have the Indiana Jones box set in widescreen. I am planning to get that this week. any thoughts on it???
Posted By: Ken.C Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/04/06 05:32 PM
I have it, but I haven't even taken the shrink wrap off. That really answers your questions, doesn't it?
Posted By: St_PatGuy Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/04/06 05:40 PM
That's funny, Ken. I, too, have many movies that are still perfectly preserved in shrink wrap. Waiting for that special day to open them up. Whenever that will be. . .

Just found one of my old time favorites, Lawerence of Arabia in suberbit from Best Buy for 9.99. Haven't seen it other than on VHS, should be fun watching on DVD with DTS
Posted By: pmbuko Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/05/06 10:55 PM
and just think, every $25 you spent on an unwatched movie could have been earning interest in a bank account, instead.

I don't get this whole delayed gratification thing. Me buy, me use day of arrival.

I'm just working towards amassing my empire (insert evil laugh).

I don't know what an empire of unwatched DVDs will get me. . .but at least I have an empire!

1. gather unwatched DVDs.
2. ???
3. PROFIT!

I do. I can give it a thumbs up. IMO they did an excellent job with this set. The video is excellent. Looks like a very clean/restored transfer. The audio is good too, nothing groundbreaking but worthy.
Posted By: AshBoomstick Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/06/06 09:53 PM
I dunno, the beginning of Raiders really makes it feel like you're in the jungle. Great use of surrounds. Also, Indy's gun in the fight at Marion's bar sounds like a damn cannon!!
Posted By: dllewel Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/06/06 10:39 PM
Don't get me wrong, no complaints with the audio at all. It's very good. I just remember being impressed with how nice the video looked. I expected the audio to be good, the video surpassed my expectation. Bottom line, it's a winner.

Another Lowry Digital restoration. They are hands down the best restoration company there is. Check out Sunset Blvd and Once Upon a Time in the West. AMAZING video restoration. (They of course did the Star Wars box set as well)

I had no interest in seeing "Kong", but after it beat out War of the Worlds at the Oscars last night (for sound editing), I think I may have to check it out.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/07/06 02:07 AM
I was disappointed by Kong. Every scene with dinosaurs in it felt like it had been done for the sake of CG and not for story.
Posted By: real80sman Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/07/06 02:17 AM
Thanks for the heads-up. I'll probably just skip it after all, then.

On recommendation from a friend, my wife rented "Rent" last night. Not ever having seen the musical, we had no idea what to expect. Although the vocal clarity sounded amazing, I do grow tired of running dialogue within a song. Other than that, for me it was just "OK".

Posted By: blackorp Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/07/06 02:40 AM
i was planning to get the kong dvd when it comes out around end of this month (still haven't seen it yet). I'll be getting it around the same time as my axiom speakers.

But a good musical is 'moulin rouge', maybe i'll rent 'rent'.

Posted By: HomeDad Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/07/06 02:59 AM
Saw the play ZZZZZ, I think I'll pass on the movie.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/07/06 01:44 PM
I loved Moulin Rouge. I have the DVD.
Posted By: dllewel Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/07/06 04:12 PM
Kong was about 40 minutes too long. Cutting out the dinosaur chase scenes would have been a good thing. The insect scene however was quite effective and a keeper. I'll probably be watching this one again at home so that I can hear the soundtrack. When I saw it in the theater, the sound was awful. I could hear the LFE coming from the theater next to us more than I heard anything from the movie we were watching.
Posted By: HomeDad Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/07/06 04:24 PM
It's funny, now that I have my new setup, I'm almost more intersted in the movies sound than it's actual content.
Posted By: JaimeG Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/07/06 04:26 PM
Me too, loved the movie.
Posted By: sonicfox Re: dts versus dd on axiom - 03/07/06 05:58 PM
I know what you mean! Not too long ago, people were talking about "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", but only because of the sound of the gunshot scenes (and of course, Angelina Jolie). I guess the movie itself was bad, but worth watching just for the sound.

The other day, I bought "Weekend at Bernie's" (one of my favorite 'guilty pleasure' movies!) on DVD and was disappointed that the audio wasn't remastered to 5.1. Yeah...like "Weekend at Bernie's" really needs a 5.1 soundtrack!

Yeah, sometimes it just doesn't matter. I've owned the DVD of Body Heat for quite awhile, as it was a favorite movie. But I kept putting off watching it, because I bought it so long ago I assumed it was 4:3 and the audio hadn't been remastered. When I decided to watch it the other night, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was 16:9 and remastered in 5.1.
About half way through the movie, it occured to me that I hadn't heard a peep out of the surrounds, and it just didn't matter...it was a good movie nonetheless.

I don't expect much out of most comedies, either. Good surround material is not what I think of when I'm watching Vacation or My Cousin Vinny....
