Due to WAF, I can only get a 3.1 system (no rear speakers).

So, on my receiver, for the rear speakers, I would select "None".

On the DVD, I would select 5.1.

My question is:

Would the sound that is supposed to go to the rear speakers just be lost? Or would it be sent to the front speakers (by the receiver)?

Thanks in advance.
It should not be lost, but redirected if setup in the receiver properly.
Hi jrock65,

If you select "None" for the surround speakers, the Dolby Digital decoder will mix the surround information normally sent to the surround speakers into the front Left and Right main channels. So you won't "lose" the information but you will lose the ambient and directional cues that add greatly to the realism of 5.1-channel surround sound.

You might check your receiver and see if it has a Dolby3 mode, which might produce greater realism than the Dolby Digital mode with the surrounds "OFF".

I really think you need to have a serious discussion with your wife. You indulge her interests, right? Then she should reciprocate. Besides, if she heard a really good surround sound setup (don't play it at deafening volume), she might agree that it really sounds SO much better and let you have the surrounds.

Nicely put.

Nicely wall mounted QS8's/QS4's look very nice, and if you route the wires correctly, they really don't get in the way of anything.
jrock, is your system on the main floor, or in the basement? If it is in the basement, do you have a drywalled ceiling or is it a "drop" ceiling with removable tiles?
