Hey guys, I am in the proccess of finishing off a new Home Theater room. The paint is dry so it is time to mount the rear speakers. My qestion is if I use the T Bracket and some dry wall anchors will that be enough to support the weight of the QS8? And will it remain sturdy down the line after the vibrations of King Kong, Band of Brothers, and Lord of the Rings have been blasted through them a few times, or will the vibrations shake the anochors loose.

If anyone knows if this will work let me know, as in most cases, the nearest stud is in an akward spot. Pics of the new Theater are coming soon!

Thanks!
Adam

One of mine is mounted directly into wood, the other is in drywall, no problem at all.

I suppose that if you use the good drywall anchors designed to support lots of weight, you should be ok. Mine are mounted down from the ceiling.

Just use good anchors and you’ll be OK.

I’ve had a lot of success with the anchors that look like an auger bit. They are very quick and easy to install and hold amazingly well.

Is that the one that looks like a huge drywall screw? Are they better than the ones with the wings that open behind the wall? (sorry for wrong terminology)

Adam, I have used the Auger bit type that Mike had suggested, with great success. The auger "anchor" goes in first, then the screw goes into it like a normal anchor.

As you can see from the ad, they will hold from 30 to 90 pounds. Mine are plastic, and hold the QS8's just fine.

30-90 pounds it's the shearing load, the load that is applied along the wall. That will be mostly the load for the lower anchor, and it's easy since the speaker weight is about 13 pounds.

But I just looked at the bracket and the upper anchor will have a pulling out force of about double of the weight, that is about 25 pounds. The doubling comes from the leverage ratio. Are they rated for that kind of stress?

I am asking because I want to hang them upstairs as well and there is no studs at that place.

Thanks,
Gena

If you're concerned about them pulling out of the wall, you can always use their beefiest anchor.

Also, their weight rating are apparently for "pullout" where the force is directly away from the wall.

Gena,

They will hold no problem. Remember, the Q’s have three attachment points so the load is distributed. They make two or three different sizes as well. I’d get the larger sized as they have more holding strength and grab more paper.

I don’t really like the toggle/wing anchors. You have to punch a fairly good sized hole in the rock which usually tears the paper on the back of the rock. With sheetrock, the paper gives it all its strength. With the anchor type, the paper is bound and held in place. When you hang rock, you try to run the screws in only far enough to counter sink the heads without breaking paper. Once the paper is broke, the screw has no holding strength. I have many high $$$ signed / numbered prints weighing up 50 pounds that I use these anchors with. They go nowhere. I wouldn’t risk hanging them if I didn’t think the anchors would hold.

pmbuko, mdrew,
Thanks for the great info. I was also not aware of paper giving the structural strength to the Sheetrock. It makes sense.

When I use toggle bolts I push a fender washer through the wall (small slit) to spread the load.

Cool well I guess that answers my questions thanks for the good info guys!

Just double checked the Q's. They have been up for about 4 months now, and there are no signs of movement or loosening. Again, I used the plastic auger anchors, and there were no studs available. (No jokes Peter!) Unless you have kids or cats that will hang on them, you should be fine.

You know, I hear male pigs have auger-like ... oh, never mind.

I use the 30 pound engineered plastic (company description!) EZ Anchor to hold my QS8s onto the 5/8" drywall in our music/TV room and also had them mounted in the old listening area with the same anchors.

Whenever I mounted the old center channel shelf onto the the interior wall of the exterior concrete block constructed wall with these same anchors in the old listening area I snipped them a little short and drilled a larger diameter pilot hole so the anchors would not bottom out on the concrete block due to the narrow 3/4" space between the drywall and concrete block wall.

I believe they will darn near hold anything onto the wall and they are extremely easy to install.

Hi Peter,

Much amused by the link. I'd heard about this in my youth from some of my rural school-mates, but never in detail.

Another vote here for the E-Z Anchors; remember that the rating is for pullout force of a single fastener. The shear rating would be quite a bit higher, and by the time you put 4 of them into a T-Bracket, they're not going anywhere. I've had my QS8's mounted this way for a couple years with no sign of trouble.

You might want to adjust your crossover then Tom. lol
