hello all!.....i've recently bought an all in one, the music hall trio from my friend who was looking to upgrade, and i thought it'd fit pretty well into my townhouse. the room size is about 12 x 12, and i was thinking to get some axioms for it. i have some old yamahas hooked up at the moment.....

so my question is should i run some floor standers (amp is rated at 50w) or go with a bookshelf and sub setup? my thinking it'd be easier on the amp to run 50w x 2 bookshelf's and a powered sub. is that logical thinking? i'm worried the floor standers (maybe M60's) would be underpowered, though i think with music hall, the watts are conservatively rated, and it pushes the yamahas pretty good. any suggestions would be greatly appriciated!! thanks!

You are indeed right that a pair of bookshelves and a sub would be an easier load. With 50 watts at hand you shouldn't have much of a problem with the M60s either. Your room is not that big so either way you would be doing good.

Btw.....Welcome.

How high are your ceilings? also, what will the speakers be used for? music or movies?

What type of music do you listen to?

I'm guessing since the m60's and m22's are both rated to be 93dB's efficient at 1 watt/1 meter, they would be similar. The 60's would give you better bass response and play lower.

Even the m3's at 92dB's efficient would work pretty good, and most likely give you better bass than the 22's without a sub.

The 60s and the 22s have similar efficiency specs but if the deep bass is removed from being reproduced by the amp then it stands to reason the amp will not have to work nearly as hard.

thanks for the responses. this is a music setup, no movie involvement. the ceiling is about 10'. the music i'll be listening to is mostly hard rock and alternative....alice in chains, pumpkins, garbage, deftones,.... i'm a big fan of the 90's. =-)

as far as the bass goes, i'm just looking for clean, tight sound, not trying to blow the neighbors away.

If I were to chose I would go M60, as I think that there is no substitution for the full range floorstander.

The M3s and sub are just a little more forgiving with poorly recorded songs. The M60s have a much fuller/richer sound than the M3/sub combo, IMO.

For a music onley system I would choose the M60s, your amp is sufficient to drive them.
