Well, the neighbors blew out the tweeters on their old Energys (I imagine the kids denied everything) so after an audition it became an easy sell to get an Epic 60 system. Alas, a 4 week wait for FO meant a month with no speakers. Being the wonderful (and possibly drunk) person I am I offered up my M22s as a loaner, thus returning my M2s to their former computer speaker duties. I promptly left town for a week so as not to be jarred by any instantaneous expulsion from audio nirvana.

Fast (slow) forward six weeks, they were finally returned last night (somewhat reluctantly, I might add) and the change to my near field, 2.1, computer setup truly is a night and day difference. I've read a few glowing reviews on the M2s and I've pretty much agreed with everything said about them. They are clear, precise, accurate, all those good things, yet I would have a hard time recommending them. They are fine stand-ins but I just don't really enjoy them. I can crank them and all they really do is get louder (while staying clear etc) without really prompting any sort of physical or emotional response. The mildly maligned M3s (with that evil nasty 100Hz bass hump) are way more fun to listen to (I certainly won't be giving those up anytime soon). I now really understand what people (was it 2x6?) mean when they say something is a "boring" speaker. No real fault to point to, just a shrug.

Stepping back up to the M22s music became an experience again. I don't think I want to lose that again.

Away to the basement with ye, M2s! Permanent demotion to rear surround duty.

Bolt them to their support. You won't lose them! \:\)
Cool that you got them back!

The M22's are special speakers, I have yet to change my mind about M3's, maybe I need to spend more time with a pair. <<nudge>> <<nudge>> ;\) ;\)

My guess is that the problem with M2s is dynamic range compression when you crank them up. I was experimenting for a while switching between M2 and M60 as mains in my HT system while playing things like the helicopter crash in the first Matrix film. A couple of different guests all said essentially the same thing - boring, lifeless etc...

On the other hand if you play something that doesn't require "wall of sound" output, the M2s are almost indistinguishable from the M60s even in a fairly large room.

Meaning you don't like the M3s?

I guess I'm glad I've never heard the 22s if that's the case. \:\)

Hi Doormat,

Cheers

Would not be my third choice of speaker from Axiom......They are not bad, just not what I like to listen to as far as sound characteristics go, good enough for some background listening. What can I say, I love my M22s/M80s and their sound. The M3s are just a little too laid back/recessed for me.

I rip my CDs at either 320MP3 or FLAC. I use the digital out from my mobo to a Yamaha HTR-6030 . My sub is a Paradigm PDR10 (but an older model).

So, essentially, I have C$900 computer speakers.

Kinda sad when you think about it.

So I don't.

...but then being kicked in the face is more laid back than your M22Tis.

OK.. that makes sense, you have a full blown receiver .. Not sure I want to go tat route.. I currently have a pair of Klipsch ProMedia (the 5.1 system but I only use it as a 2.1) which as a dual 8" sub and it sounds pretty good .. I was one who purchased the very first original ProMedia 4.1 system many years ago and I have always like the performance of them. Cambridge was good to until Creative Labs purchased them.. I was running a Turttle Beach Santa Cruz for many years, then went to an M-Audio Revolution.. very good card.. Now I've got an Asus Zonar D2X .. but I digress.. Thanks for the info..
