I just bought a pair of M3ti's. They just don't seem to sound right. They sound very withdrawn like i was listening from another room, but i don't think it's the speakers. I have a Yamaha htr 5550 receiver connected to the cheapest dvd player money can buy via a Monster coax cable. The speakers are connected with Monster speaker wire too. Is it possible that the dvd player might be causing the poor quality sound (even though I use the receiver's DAC)?

Thanks

JB, I would double check the polarity of the speaker connections.

JB, what are you comparing the sound with? Have you used other speakers? The M3 is slightly laid back compared to the M2 or M22, but not to the extent you describe. It's highly unlikely that the player has anything to do with it, since all it's doing is sending out a stream of digital 1s and 0s. The wires also make no difference. Have other speakers sounded much different when driven by that receiver?

JB, agree with the suggestions put forth from Real and JohnK. Is there more output from the speakers when listening to sources other than your DVD (i.e., FM tuner), or do they still sound "distant" regardless of the source?

Cheers.

it's not the speaker polarity (black to black etc, right?). I don't have any other speakers to test the receiver on except some logitech computer speakers (from the z540 - amazing for computer speakers btw). they sound much worse on the receiver.

I'm just a little dissappointed that my very well researched $1000 (canadian) bought be a system that sounds about the same as a cheap home theatre in a box.

To make things worse, when i turn off Dolby Pro Logic II (and listen to 2 channel sound), the music is even more muddy! I just don't understand.

sigh...

Hmmm. It really sounds like this still might be a polarity issue. Perhaps the internal wiring on one of your speakers or your amp is backwards?

Try switching the wires around on only one of your speakers so it's hooked up backwards and see if that helps.
