As the very newest (and most inexperienced) member to date, I was wondering if anyone has compared Boston Acoustics new VR-3 (or even the VR-2) to Axiom's M80's? Any opinions on Boston Accoustics? Also, is anyone near Great Falls, VA (or Reston) willing to allow me to listen to your Axiom M80's? I'm totally new to Axioms, but the reviews have been very favorable and would like to learn more about the product. (Of course, salespeople diss the product since it is not distributed through local retail channels.) Thanks!

I have a really goo dlocal place, and when i was speaking with them, they just blinked when I mentioned Axiom. They had no clue.

Then of course, they start saying, 'I wouldn't buy speakers without hearing them first...'

That is what the 30 days are for....

I've heard a few of the Boston VR series speakers (though not specifically the VR3) and they can't compare. The upper bass/lower mids are REALLY muddy, and the their low end tended to be a bit boomy. Certainly not the charactaristics you're going to want in a speaker.

The M60/M80's are clean and tight from top to bottom.

How big is your room? How far away will you be sitting? How far apart will the speakers be from eachother/side walls/rear wall?

my advice is to buy a speaker not a brand name(BAcoustics)

But then how do you get around the fact that all speakers have brand names?

Wallmart has speakers. I haven't even heard of some their brand names in the audioworld like Jensen and Citizen. They must be good!!!!!!!

I don't recall any owners in VA. I'm south of Baltimore just off of I-95 if you want to make a trek to hear some M22s.

Hi verynewest,

Boston Acoustic's strength has always been in small, inexpensive compact 2-way speakers. The company's first outings with aluminum drivers--I believe the models were called Lynnfield--were embarrassingly colored and inaccurate. I recall a private listening session to an early Lynnfield prototype (I was editor of Sound&Vision-Canada at the time) and I didn't have the heart to tell the president just how bad the speaker was. I suppose I should have, but many speaker designers don't want criticism.

I doubt the towers have improved much, but I've not heard the model you mention. Boston has never had the benefit of controlled scientific research and double-blind listening tests like those at the National Research Council in Ottawa, where Axiom's prototype speakers are measured and tweaked.

Regards,

The very first pair of speakers I ever bought (nice speakers that is) were Snell Acoustics type K/II's. When I bought them, my listening sessions had gotten down to them or a small pair of BA's. I ended up with the Snell's because the BA's midrange was a bit muffled. They didn't have the clarity of the Snell's. They did produce a bit more bass though, and my older brother ended up with the Boston's. That was 10 years ago, and those little bookshelf speakers were the only BA speakers I've ever even considered buying. They just don't have the clarity that I enjoy.
