I've only had sporadic opportunities to listen to them, but I can say with certainty that the M3s share the same tweeter unit as the M60s.
I would not describe the M3s as "laid-back". At the very high end they sound the same. The single 6.5 inch driver does not cover the whole frequency range as well as the M60's multiple drivers do (duh!). I'm not sure I could live with bookshelves sans sub, but I plan on bringing home some other bookshelf speakers just to make sure (sub in the upstairs gameroom would be out of the question).
Wife gave me the go ahead to start demoing all kinds of speakers from the local stores so long as I keep only one pair. And it turns out I have room for towers if I like - I'm thinking those Silver8s would be pretty damn good gameroom speakers!!!

Chess,

You've no right to complain.

I have every right to complain.
My dream system has yet to be born. Until that day, i will pine and stamp my feet.
You are welcome to stamp along with me Peter.
Come on now, let's practice a bit here.

if anyone was interested, there seems to be a good deal on Silver 9s here, Canadian Hi-Fi. I'm not too sure since I haven't priced these out before.

Upon further review... the M3s still sound not very good in the 14x14 gameroom. However, 2x6 just left from an M60 demoing session and just for kicks we brought the M3s down to the family room. On top of the M60s, being fed by a Denon receiver and CD player, they sounded like different speakers. They were excellent. Either the 14x14 square room conditions or the Pioneer receiver or the less than optimal spacing in the upstairs gameroom cause the M3s to sound less than stellar. Downstairs was a completely different story. I'm guessing it's the room dimensions - any thoughts???
BTW, 2x6 brought his "M22-like Michaura M55s" and we gave those a listen too. Excellent little speakers. Clear and precise, perfectly neutral. Maybe a touch more warmth than the standard Axioms. Nice high gloss finish. Great little speakers.

It was great meeting BigWill and finally hearing a pair of beautiful M60s. It was also great hearing his pair of M3Tis which are wonderful speakers. BigWill's M3s in Mansfield Beech look much better than the pair in cherry vinyl that I had.

The M3s are extraordinary speakers - they compare very well to the M60s. There's something so smooth, so open, so natural about the M3s that you just gotta love 'em.

They just lack a little something in the upper bass region, midrange and a lack of just a bit of integration which separates these incredible overachievers from the extremely expensive top- of-class mini monitors.

So, thank you BigWill for your hospitality and the opportunity to do some comparisons among the M3Ti, M60Ti and M22-like Michaura M55.
