There appears to be two possible locations for a pair of M50s in my friend's 15-18' by 35-40' basement room. The tile ceiling must be about 8' and the walls are wood paneled. Floor is carpet on concrete. The north wall is one of the short walls and there is an entry door on the north wall at the northwest corner. There is another door on the east wall at the northeast corner. A pool table area takes up the south half of the room.
One possibe location is on the north wall. There would be a sofa in the normal listening location and another sofa on the east wall near the northeast door.
The other possibility would be the east wall , just south of the NE door. This keeps them out of the potential traffic area on the north wall (there are no kids involved). One sofa would be in the listening position on the west wall and the other would be on the north wall.
Any strong opinions one way or the other?

Either one is going to work just fine as long as you are seated in one of the listening positions. I would lean towards the north wall just so the performance was better while playing pool as well.
