On the wood Liv.Rm. floor my 1st sub has been up on spikes since new for about 3 months. It is now "floating" on foam balls from a sporting goods store........Has anyone else tried or heard about doing this? It seems there is still plenty of bass and now it does not shake the floor and walls so violently, and that seems like a good thing.

Since I have so much time on my hands I'll make a reply. It is possible nobody really bothers putting spikes and cushions under their sub, they probably just drop it in place and forget it.

OUCH!! sorry man.. sometimes people just dont have actual experience as compared to what you are asking. so they dont answer, and the thread eventually just gets lost in the shuffle.

i think what really matters is, which way sounds best to you? i think most people just put the sub directly on the ground. but, i know some who live in apts often put them on the stabilizer slabs. it helps keep the bass from going thru the walls to the next floors.

hope you can get it the way you like it. and trust me, the lack of response was nothing personal. i didnt answer specifically cause i have never tried the floating deal. to be honest, i was interested to hear what peoples results had been when they tried that..... i guess not many have?

I put my sub on those rubber things Axiom provided with the sub. Spikes only should be for carpet floors, no?

Hi Riff...Mine was spiked and on the carpet and it shook the house but not after changing the spikes to soft foam balls. Guess a guy can use whatever he wants..Have a good day.

Ned, I thought about replying, but I just don't really have anything to offer here, and am sensitive to those people who object (rightly, often) that spewing conjecture or uninformed opinion does not really help.

Relative to Axiom tower speakers, I recall Alan saying that there was no audible difference between using the spikes and the rubber feet. The spikes are designed for carpet and the other for hard surfaces. As with other things in this hobby, the "right thing" is whatever sounds best to your ears in your room.

Relative to my M60's, I like the spikes because they ensure the speakers won't get moved (scooted). There are also minute (but likely discernable) issues relative to height with the tower speakers that would not be relevant with a sub.

It seems like your change from the spikes to the foam would uncouple (decouple?) the sub from your house somewhat. Again, if you like it better that way, that's all that matters.

Alan seems right about not being any audible differences, he seems to be a pretty sharp critter. Over at Audiogon where I used to post a bit seemed like I would get replies on everything but then this would be the small "home town" forum where AG would be the "big city".
