Regarding the M50s, what would be the best placement as far as distance from the rear and side walls? Presently, I have them about 6 inches from the side walls (toed-in) and about 12 inches from the rear wall. I'm thinking that is too close as the bass response is somewhat diminished. Or, perhaps the front part of my room is somewhat "dead."

Any suggestions?

The opposite may be the case. As you move the speakers closer to the back wall or corner the bass will be increased. Room nodes can be a reality, the question is does the bass increase if you move into the middle of the room? If it does then you may be facing a "dead" spot in the room but moving the speakers closer to the wall or corner will help a lot. Also you should check your phasing to ensure the speakers are wired to the amplifier positive to positive and negative to negative.
