Buzzing in an M40 -- solved - 08/03/05 03:45 PM
So... I rearranged the upstairs system yesterday trying to get the M40s further away from the wall. Felt I was getting just a bit too much mid-bass. I think part of the problem might have been that the woofer height from the floor was the same as the distance from both back and side walls, so there would have been some single-frequency reinforcement going on there.
Basically moved the speakers from the long wall (17 feet) to the short wall (11 feet) so that woofer height, distance from the side walls and distance from the back walls were all different... and was able to get the speakers a bit further from the back walls to boot.
Fired it up and was very pleased with the sound. The bass was much more smooth and the imaging seemed to improve a bit, which surprised me because the speakers were now quite close to the side walls so there would definitely be some strong reflections (walls are not treated at all). I guess the reflection off the back wall hurt the imaging more than the reflection off the side walls -- who'da thought ?
The only bad thing was an intermittent buzzing in the right speaker, which showed up only on specific tracks. Loud saxophone seemed to be the worst offender. Tried swapping the speaker wires from the receiver but the buzzing stayed on the right hand speaker. Oh no, bad speaker ?
Turned out the problem was that I had put my clock radio on top of the right hand speaker (it is a bedroom after all) and the clock radio case was buzzing on loud notes. The power cord is too short to move the clock radio, but if I put it on the floor when listening everything sounds fine
Oh well -- a day in the life...
